Crystal planting starts as 2011 slice finale comes 
Sugar beet processing season is coming to a close in the Red River Valley, even as the planting season is revving up. Jeff Schweitzer, spokesman for American Crystal Sugar Co. in Moorhead, Minn., said most of the factories are down to processing beets in cold storage sheds. In some cases, the remaining beet storages are equipped with chilling mat covers, with large refrigeration units that can be employed if necessary.

Drayton economic board believes restaurant will bring visitors
Common wisdom is that a town is lost once its school closes. But Pete Anderson, president of both the local KodaBank and the town’s economic development board, sees it differently. “I think it’s more like if you don’t have a restaurant, you’re not a town, because then you don’t have a social gathering place,” he said.

FACES: Raising reindeer is fun hobby for Drayton area man
The holiday season is a busy time at the Reindeer Ranch.
During December, ranch owner Vernon Hoselton makes appearances with his reindeer at yuletide events across North Dakota. This weekend, for example, Hoselton took Iggy and Chocolate, two of his does, to the Gateway Mall in Bismarck. Ollie, Panda and Norma, three other reindeer are at Santa Village at Rhealt Farm in Fargo.

Merrill, the owner of Framed Nature in Drayton, makes artwork, including pictures, pins and hair accessories from pheasant feathers. She began working with feathers about five years ago after she decided they would create longer lasting artwork than the flowers she had previously used in her Framed Nature business.
