Some people still don’t know that in July, the North Dakota Department of Health changed the permit to drain from Devils Lake into the Sheyenne River. The department increased the allowable sulfate level in the river to 750 milligrams per liter from 450 mg/L so that the State Water Commission could pump 100 cubic feet per second all the time.

N.D. officials OK Devils Lake projects 
The North Dakota Water Commission has approved a $16.5 million project aimed controlling the level of swollen Devils Lake. Assistant Water Commission Engineer Todd Sando says the project involves installing additional pumps along the Devils Lake outlet that could remove more than 6 inches of water annually from the lake.
