North Dakota recorded its first positive case of chronic wasting disease in 2009, when a mule deer buck that appeared sickly tested positive in Unit 3F2 near the South Dakota border. A second deer, a mule deer doe that looked healthy, tested positive for CWD in December. That deer also came from 3F2.
The deer was among 524 tested for the disease in the Pine Island area, in southeast Minnesota. For hunters and wildlife enthusiasts, the announcement began a season of dread. For several state agencies, it triggered emergency plans. For Minnesotans who regularly eat venison, it raised old questions about deer health and human consumption.
As part of the restriction, hunters shooting a deer or other big game animal in North Dakota Unit 3F2 — Sioux County — can’t transport a carcass containing the head or spinal column unless it’s taken directly to a state-inspected meat processor.

The Game and Fish Department learned Wednesday that a sick-looking mule deer shot and reported last fall by a hunter in western Sioux County in far southwestern North Dakota had tested positive for the disease. The deer was an adult buck, and the positive diagnosis marks the first time CWD has been found in North Dakota.
North Dakota deer hunters are reminded that deer-head collection barrels will be removed from collection sites today. After that, hunters who would still like to submit deer heads for chronic wasting disease and bovine tuberculosis testing must take the head to a Game and Fish Department district office before Nov. 30.
