A Cass County man is facing several felony charges after he was arrested for a string of thefts in North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota. Forty-eight-year-old Paul Baumler of Leonard, N.D. is being held in the Cass County Jail.

Fargo man charged with raping unconscious woman 
A 47-year-old Fargo man was charged Wednesday with raping an unconscious woman at his Fargo apartment here last September. According to charges filed in Cass County District Court, Allen Cooper and several friends had been out drinking the night of Sept. 4. The group returned to Cooper’s apartment to watch a movie, at which point the woman fell asleep.

A slain Fargo woman whose husband was arrested Wednesday for allegedly stabbing her to death was a “very good employee” who didn’t say anything negative about her husband in the brief time she worked at Fargo’s Elim Rehab & Care Center, a spokeswoman said today. Fargo man, 31, dies in early morning apartment fire 
Crews arrived at the apartment around 12:45 a.m. today and found a fire in the kitchen of a first floor unit. Firefighters knocked down the blaze within minutes and transported James Peyton to Essentia Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Cass County Sheriff Paul Laney has landed a national honor. The National Sheriff's Association has named Laney its sheriff of the year. Laney will receive the award during the association's annual conference June 17 in Nashville, Tenn.
