March for Babies: Registration for March for Babies Grand Forks begins at 9 a.m. today in Ralph Engelstad Arena, 801 N. Columbia Road. The walk begins at 10 a.m. followed by an awards ceremony and refreshments. The walk is open to the public.
Bryan Klipfel is the new executive director of Workforce Safety and Insurance, Gov. John Hoeven announced this morning. Klipfel was commander of the North Dakota Highway Patrol from 2003 to 2007, when he retired to take a position at Job Service.
Job openings at the Job Service North Dakota center in Fargo fell from 2,400 on Jan. 1 to 1,936 late last week, a decrease of 19.3 percent. Claims for unemployment checks at the Fargo center are more than double the number a year ago.
Thirteen months ago, Patrick Case was laid off from his job as a used car lot manager in Florida.
“The housing boom was going south, which affected the car business, which cost me my job,” he said. “Ultimately, I had to sell my house and the whole nine yards.”
He returned to his North Dakota roots, specifically to Northwood where his father lived. Family was one reason for relocating. Job security was another.
