City Council member Greg Leigh, who floated the idea, eventually joined everyone else in opposing 5 mph increase on The Point’s main thoroughfare to 35 mph. So, it died in Tuesday’s work session.

There are a lot of explanations why, but local governments in and around Grand Forks have grown. The 2012 budgets of the city, the county and the park and school districts, adjusted for inflation, are bigger than they were 10 years ago. Yet the populations they serve have not grown nearly as much, nor, in some cases, has the area’s economy.

Council: East Grand Forks pool repairs maybe, new pool no 
East Grand Forks may get a repaired pool. But it won’t get a new pool. That was determined when the City Council voted unanimously to spend $8,000 for a study that would determine necessary repairs to the 50-year-old pool. But council members voted 6-1 against spending an additional $5,000 to study a new pool.

Project would link Grand Forks and EGF systemsEast Grand Forks Mayor Lynn Stauss vetoed the wastewater interconnect project once and appears poised to do it again. The project, which has EGF sending its wastewater to Grand Forks for treatment, was approved once in theory by the City Council but later vetoed by Stauss because he wanted further study of the costs.
