Stuart McFarlane buck

Stuart McFarlane of Roseau, Minn., shot his biggest buck ever Nov. 6 in northwest Minnesota near the western edge of Permit Area 101. The buck weighed 206 pounds, field-dressed, and has 15 countable points with a gross Boone and Crockett score of 176 3/8. “It will probably be the biggest buck I ever shoot,” McFarlane writes. “Biggest regret is that in the excitement we didn’t take the time to get any really good pictures, but he will be on the wall.” McFarlane also included a trail camera photo (right) of the same buck taken in June.

Jeff Welsh of Grand Forks shot this 10-point buck about 8:30 a.m. Nov. 11 in North Dakota Unit 2F1 near the Sheyenne River. “I was a in a deer hut with my dad, and I missed a nice buck earlier in the morning,” Welsh writes. “Fortunately we stayed patient and another nice one came by.” The big buck weighed 200 pounds field-dressed, Welsh writes.

Michael Swenson buck

Michael Swenson of East Grand Forks shot this buck Nov. 3, the opening morning of Minnesota’s firearms deer season, while hunting in Otter Tail County. The buck had a nine-point rack with 10- to 11-inch tines. According to Michael’s dad, Mark Swenson, he dropped the buck at 20 yards with one shot from his .300. It’s been quite a year for Michael, who also landed a 30-inch walleye earlier this year, Mark writes.

EGF middle school fishing excursion

Students from the Outdoors Club at Central Middle School in East Grand Forks took a fishing trip Wednesday to the Woods-Rutten Road on Devils Lake, where they fished from shore near the bridge. Jhett Pesch (bottom photo left) caught the northern pike, while Ross Corbid (bottom right) landed a walleye. Teacher and club adviser Allen Edman shared the photos. Edman said 32 students and five chaperones made the excursion. "We actually landed 2 northerns and a walleye in 3 hours of fishing but had quite a few that were lost at the bank or bit us off. Fish bit on lindy rigs, jigs and crankbaits," Edman writes. "We used minnows, leeches, and crawlers. Most action came on the minnows. Cabelas gave us a deal on tackle and Home of Economy donated the live bait for free, and the MN Deer Hunters Association donated some rod/reel combos."
