Stadium passes House, on to Senate
The Minnesota Vikings are close to a new stadium after the House early today approved a construction plan 71-60. Representatives debated the stadium bill an hour and 50 minutes after day-long negotiations produced a compromise bill after the House and Senate passed differing versions. Soon after passing the stadium bill, the House adjourned for the year before 4 a.m. today.

Stadium negotiators reach deal
Private meetings throughout today apparently yielded a compromise on how to build a Vikings stadium. Legislative officials said no details will be made public until a 9 p.m. House-Senate conference committee meeting. That meeting is expected to ratify negotiators’ work, and the full House could take up the bill later tonight or early Thursday. Senators are not expected to debate the measure until later Thursday.

User fees dominated the Minnesota Senate’s Vikings stadium construction debate Tuesday. Senators rejected a plan 35-30 to replace stadium construction funding with user fees. They had voted 34-33 to accept the amendment, but rejected it after a member asked for senators to vote again.

House to review public works bill
The Minnesota House will decide today whether to send a nearly $500 million public works borrowing bill to the governor or continue work on it. On Monday, the House and Senate passed slightly different versions of the bill, which would allow state funds to go toward colleges, roads, bridges, flood prevention and the state Capitol building, among other needs throughout the state.

Nearly $500 million in higher education, infrastructure repair and other public works projects will be funded by a borrowing bill if the House and Senate agree in final negotiations.
The House approved 99-32 Monday and the Senate 45-22.

Legislative retirees different, but proud of work
Keith Langseth has spent half of his nearly 75 years as a Minnesota legislator. Mark Murdock has been in the House less than four years. Langseth is a Democrat. Murdock is a Republican. Langseth is a dairy farmer. Murdock is a long-time hardware store owner. Despite differences, the two Minnesota legislators, among more than two dozen retiring this year, well illustrate the attitude of many lawmakers. Both talk about being involved in democracy and say they are in awe every time they enter the Capitol building.
