The UND women’s basketball team is undertaking a unique preseason practice schedule. That’s because UND is embarking on a five-day journey to Toronto to play three games in the next few days against Canadian All-Star teams.
About 10 years ago, Travis Brewster and Craig Mansfield were assistants under then-UND women’s basketball head coach Gene Roebuck. That connection has led UND to add 6-foot-3 Australian center Samantha Roscoe, who will be eligible immediately.
UND’s first trip through the Big Sky Conference didn’t go as planned. North Dakota didn’t make the upcoming seven-team league tournament — a rarity considering the program has been accustomed to the postseason in some shape or manner for years.
It’s a good thing the Big Sky Conference season consists of 20 games, lasting from mid-December through early March. And lessons often are learned in such a long season, much like the one UND capitalized on during its 62-55 win over Montana State on Thursday night before 1,362 fans at The Betty.
UND let an 11-point second half lead slip away as Eastern Washington picked up a come-from-behind victory over UND on Thursday. “We turned it over at the wrong part of the game,” UND coach Travis Brewster said. “We panicked a little bit.”
Minutes after Seattle University beat UND in the opening round of the Women’s Basketball Invitational in March, North Dakota coach Gene Roebuck calmly was sitting on the trainer’s table inside the Connolly Center. After 25 years in charge of UND women’s basketball, Roebuck had coached his last game.
When preparing the 2012-13 schedule, UND men’s basketball coach Brian Jones was looking for a nonconference home game over the Christmas break. The search ended at Bowling Green, a Mid-American Conference team that has pushed Michigan State and South Florida to the limit this season.
UND women’s basketball coach Travis Brewster received a one-game suspension from the Big Sky Conference on Friday for comments he made regarding officiating following North Dakota’s league game against Southern Utah.
The usual method for North Dakota State in preparing for a women’s basketball game is to watch videotape of the opponent. Instead, they watched the PBS documentary “When They Were Kings,” a look at the NDSU and University of North Dakota rivalry back in the Division II heyday.
