Not many college coaches venture to Indiana to recruit. Even so, UND coach Brian Idalski and his staff didn’t have many worries about offering a scholarship to a defenseman from Fort Wayne named Gracen Hirschy.
When the National Collegiate Hockey Conference was unveiled in 2011, seven of its eight members were in the NCAA tournament the previous season. Two were in the Frozen Four. One was the national champion. The league figured to be a major player on the national scene.
Ralph Engelstad and hockey brought Hubert Jean “Frenchy” Lacrosse to Grand Forks in 1952. He was playing hockey for the San Bernardino (Calif.) Shamrocks, meeting ex-UND hockey players including Engelstad, who convinced him to come to UND to play hockey.
In 2006, the University of Minnesota earned the No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. Its reward was coming to Grand Forks and playing in front of a hostile crowd of about 12,000, who were almost all rooting for the Gophers to lose.
Christopher McComas may have no formal coaching experience (he’s a system integration specialist at Marshall University) and no ties to North Dakota. But his application and cover letter definitely stood out from the rest.
If the UND men’s hockey team makes the NCAA tournament next season, it will play its regional in Fargo. Scheels Arena was awarded the 2015 NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey West Regional on Wednesday as the NCAA announced future postseason sites for both men’s and women’s hockey.
UND’s search for its next football coach intensifies beginning today now that the application deadline has closed. The application deadline for the position was Tuesday. At the end of the day, UND had received 72 applications — including one with close ties to North Dakota football.
It’s understandable if UND wants to get beyond volleyball coach Ashley Hardee’s resignation and move on. But that mustn’t happen — at least not before an investigation has been completed, the university has reconsidered key policies, and the findings and any policy changes have been announced.
Tuesday is the application deadline for search to find the next UND football coach. But it’s still too early to determine when UND’s next coach will be hired. In its job description, UND said the application deadline is Tuesday but the position will remain open until filled.
UND has an older, experienced basketball men’s basketball team. Still, it was almost an eye-opening experience for the North Dakota players when they made their first appearance at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Saturday night to meet Butler.
