The children who escaped last month's shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown will be returning to classes in a neighboring town in a refurbished school now named after their old one, school officials said Wednesday.
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack says the Newtown school shootings have changed the gun control debate and that rural America is ready to be part of a national conversation that he believes could bring people together.
Missy Dodds was a high school math teacher in Red Lake, Minn., on March 21, 2005, when a 16-year-old student burst through the glass window of her classroom and continued the killing he had started minutes before in the hallway.
The 17-year-old gunman who opened fire at his Nebraska high school, killing an assistant principal, had been suspended from class and removed from the building hours earlier for driving on an athletic field, police said today.
The son of a police detective opened fire at a Nebraska high school Wednesday, wounding the principal and killing the assistant principal and forcing panicked students to take cover in the kitchen of the building where he had attended classes for no more than two months.
His first shots blasted the film projector and punched into a wall. The last he aimed at himself. In between, the 15-year-old high school sophomore held his teacher and about two dozen classmates hostage for more than six hours.
