A national conservation group said this week it is honoring Valerie Naylor, superintendent of Theodore Roosevelt National Park in western North Dakota, for her work defending the park from the impact of energy development.

North Dakota regulators on Tuesday approved a plan that will allow a company to drill for oil near Theodore Roosevelt National Park after resubmitting an application that moves its operation away from the historic Elkhorn Ranch where Theodore Roosevelt built a cabin in the early 1880s.
Because of the federal government shutdown, all national parks were required to close. North Dakota’s park got four hours — 8 a.m. to noon — to get things in order, like putting up signs and informing campers they had 48 hours to leave.
Theodore Roosevelt National Park in western North Dakota is hosting a three-day astronomy festival. The park says astronomers, rangers, educators and others will gather Friday through Sunday for the event dubbed Dakota Nights.
