Investigators say Thursday's crash near San Marcos killed 66-year-old Clarence Schollmeyer of Killdeer, N.D. Authorities are trying to determine what led to the fiery crash of the twin-engine Cessna during foggy conditions.
North Dakota has its first highway roundabout near Killdeer. Dunn County Sheriff Don Rockvoy tells the Bismarck Tribune that the roundabout at the intersection of state highways 200 and 22 is working as designed.
Gov. Jack Dalrymple announced today that a $10 million temporary highway bypass is slated to be completed this summer in Williston. A similar $6 million project also is scheduled to be completed this summer in New Town.
As of today, Killdeer will be without the Killdeer Town Criers, the town's unofficial chamber of commerce, officials said Friday. "I think we all have really sad feelings about it," said Vicki Pennington, a Killdeer Town Criers representative. "The organization has been really active for such a long time." The Town Criers informed city officials in November it was dissolving effective Dec. 31, Mayor Don Dolechek said.
North Dakota regulators have approved a huge new oil production unit north of Killdeer. It covers 30,000 acres just south of the Little Missouri River. It's expected to produce at least 15 million barrels of crude.

Corde Thomas Fredericks, 21, a former Killdeer High School wrestling star, could light up the room with a smile. But that smile is gone now as he died suddenly Thursday and the cause is unclear, family members said. He loved extreme sports and had "a fearless attitude," his brother, Allias Fredericks, said. The only thing matching that attitude was the size of his heart, family and friends said.
Landslides and shifting ground in May made State Highway 22 impassable north of Killdeer. Transportation Department officials say crews moved the road 600 feet to the west and gave it a temporary asphalt surface. Permanent repairs are planned next year.
