President Barack Obama has revived debate about the number of jobs that would be created by the proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline from Canada to Texas. The 1,700-mile pipeline would carry oil from tar sands in Alberta to refineries in the Houston area.
It’s probably not a good idea to get involved in a political squabble involving the president, a cabinet secretary and a member of the U.S. Senate.
But we’re going to do it anyway. Because – in this case – the senator is incontrovertibly correct. Besides, he’s North Dakota’s own John Hoeven.
The Tea Party Republicans in the U.S. House show a trait that infuriates President Barack Obama: They refuse to compromise. And Obama relentlessly scolds the GOP about this. The party must stop heeding its extremists, who refuse to bend and who brook no arguments with their ideology, Obama claims.
The evidence is in: North Dakota Sen. John Hoeven picked the right issue on which to step to the front and take a leadership role among Senate Republicans.
That issue is the matter of the Keystone XL pipeline. Because as polling data now suggests, public opinion has broken strongly to the Senate Republicans' side.
As for jobs in Western North Dakota, the pipeline is not even being built on North Dakota land.
But let’s imagine that the pipeline does wind up carrying some North Dakota crude. Wouldn’t this cause tanker truck company owners in North Dakota to lay off drivers and support staff?
Obama made the right choice to deny the Keystone XL permit now. He also made the right choice to invite TransCanada to submit a new application as soon as a better route has been selected through Nebraska.
Because there is so much money to be made, I suspect that new Keystone pipeline will be built soon. Still, there is no reason to rush. If the pipeline is a good idea today, it will be a good idea tomorrow. There is no harm in taking time to make sure it is done safely.
