The anniversary of Superstorm Sandy was a day of reflection for many — a time to ponder still-missed loved ones who died when coastal communities were hit by an unprecedented surge of seawater and a chance to take stock of how far recovery efforts have come.
The House has overwhelmingly approved $9.7 billion to pay flood insurance claims for the many home and business owners flooded out by Superstorm Sandy. The vote came more than two months after the storm hit and days after Northeast Republicans erupted over House Speaker John Boehner's decision to delay an earlier vote.
Kerry Ann Troy had just finished her daily "cry time" — that half-hour between dropping the kids off at school and driving back to her gutted house on New York's Long Island, or to the hurricane relief center, or to wherever she was headed in those desperate days after Sandy, when life seemed an endless blur of hopelessness and worry.
In the days after Superstorm Sandy a New Jersey man rescued an artificial Christmas tree. He set it up in a vacant field — and watched in amazement as grieving residents made the tree their own, adorning it with handmade ornaments, lights, and messages of hope, defiance and recovery.
The Rolling Stones will join the artists already booked for next week's televised Superstorm Sandy benefit show in New York City, which producers said Friday would be the most widely available live concert ever.
On Brad Weninger’s first trip to New York, the days were long, the work was treacherous and a cot in an empty office building qualified as luxury accommodations. “It was frustrating and rewarding all at the same time,” said Weninger in a phone interview this week. “It’s been a great experience.”
