A 79-year-old Devils Lake woman lost $10,000 after being victimized in a “grandparent scam.” The woman went to her local bank and had $10,000 sent via wire transfer to someone in a city near Lima, Peru, according to Devils Lake Police Detective Sue Schwab.
The patrol did not identify the 24-year-old driver, who was the only person in the car. He was taken to Mercy Hospital. The crash happened about 6:15 a.m. on state Highway 20, about 1.25 miles south of Devils Lake.
The victim of a fatal crash Thursday was identified as a 29-year-old Colorado man. Luis Escobar, whose address is listed as Colorado Springs but was employed in Devils Lake, was traveling west on U.S. Highway 2, according to an accident report from the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
The Devils Lake City Council is considering whether to allow a second fireworks season in the days before New Year’s Eve, but Mayor Dick Johnson said the feedback from the public has been a unanimous thumbs-down.
Devils Lake Basin officials are renewing a campaign to allow water from Stump Lake to flow naturally to the Tolna Coulee, even though more than $100 million has been spent in the past decade to build outlets that pump a maximum of 600 cubic feet of water per second to the Sheyenne River about five months a year.
