For the time being, the new way of officiating college basketball doesn’t make for the prettiest of sport. The whistle frenzy creates a choppy atmosphere that can zap life from the rowdiest of crowds — like the one assembled in a sold-out Betty Engelstad Sioux Center for UND’s matchup with rival North Dakota State on Sunday.

UND continued its fall in the U.S. News and World Report’s annual college rankings, as the magazine released its 2014 figures this week. U.S. News ranked UND No. 97 of all public institutions in the “national universities” category, which is the category that includes schools that “offer a full range of undergraduate majors, plus master’s and Ph.D. programs.” UND was ranked No. 94 last year.
The State Board of Higher Education will meet here behind closed doors Monday to discuss the contract of Chancellor Hamid Shirvani.

The joy of graduation runs up and down the streets of Grand Forks today with high school graduations. And the joy runs rampant in one Grand Forks home where three in the family graduated this month as doctors of medicine.
After UND doctoral student Godfrey Mnubi finished defending his dissertation Monday in Grand Forks, his voice was filled with excitement. “I feel so terrific and so happy,” he said. “I was waiting for this day.”
