Three U.S.-based scientists won a Nobel Prize on Wednesday for developing a powerful new way to do chemistry on a computer. They pioneered highly sophisticated computer simulations of complex chemical processes, giving researchers tools they are now using for a wide variety of tasks.

The farmer-owned cooperative CHS Inc. has pledged $3 million toward a national agricultural safety initiative. Carl Casale, president and CEO of Arden Hills-based CHS, made the announcement Wednesday at the North American Agricultural Safety Summit in Minneapolis.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture wants to make it safer for young people working in farming. The USDA has awarded a grant to provide safety training for more than 2 million young people involved in agricultural production.
"Breaking Bad" took home the top honor at Sunday's Primetime Emmy Awards, winning the best drama series prize for the first time, as AMC's gritty tale of a schoolteacher turned meth kingpin heads into the homestretch of its final season.
Emmy Awards crystal-ball gazing was so much easier in the old days, circa the last few years: ABC's "Modern Family" would be honored as best comedy series and a cable show, "Homeland" or "Mad Men" or such, would win best drama.

Don’t say anything about old dogs and new tricks to Gypsy, the Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Department’s dog. Ten-years-old and on the verge of retirement, the chocolate Lab just won her second top award in a statewide police dog competition.
Comic and daytime television host Ellen DeGeneres was picked to host the Academy Awards for the second time. Show producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron announced DeGeneres' selection Friday. The movie awards show will air on ABC on March 2.
Roesler was voted the lone recipient of the 2013 honor by the North Dakota Associated Press Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. The award is given to North Dakota natives who excel in sports outside of the state.
Two-time Grammy winner and Windom native Maria Schneider has once again been recognized for her work by the Jazz Journalists Association, which gave Schneider the 2013 Composer-Arranger of the Year award.
