CO Robert Gorecki (Baudette) said nglers were reporting approximately 6 to 8 inches of ice on most of Upper Red Lake, but caution is advised as ice thickness seems to vary greatly by location. Ice conditions seem to be progressing on Lake of the Woods, but reports of ATV’s going through the ice were reported.
CO Robert Gorecki (Baudette) observed deer shining activity that eventually led to one suspect being charged for felony flee, 2nd Degree DWI, and driving with cancelled driver’s license. The other individual at the scene was later charged with illegal shining for deer.
Natural Resources Pilot John Heineman (Bemidji) flew northwest Minnesota bear telemetry locating their dens so the biologist can locate them on the ground for their annual health checks and collar battery change.
CO Jeremy Woinarowicz (Thief River Falls) reports enforcement action for the week included taking deer over bait, take deer without valid license, untagged deer, felon in possession of firearm, stands left in WMA and multiple transporting loaded firearms in motor vehicle violations.

Natural Resources Pilot John Heineman (Bemidji) flew duck surveys for Thief Lake and Roseau River Wildlife Management Areas. The new assistant managers at Thief and Roseau also came along for a first look from the air of their new work areas.
A 16-year-old boy was the victim of an apparent wolf attack at a campground on Lake Winnibigoshish near Deer River, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources announced Monday. The boy sustained non-life-threatening injuries, according to a DNR news release.
CO Demosthenes Regas (Blackduck) spent time monitoring bear baiting activity. Several bear hunters reported being pleased that bears are coming into the baits in spite of an abundance of natural forage.
The Department of Natural Resources says the wildfire danger has been rising across Minnesota. Precipitation over the last 30 days has been half the normal level over most of the state, so fire managers are urging people to use caution in dry areas.
