DOUG LEIER: Managing N.D. deer numbers not as easy as it sounds

DOUG LEIER: Managing N.D. deer numbers not as easy as it sounds More than 30 years ago, when the North Dakota Game and Fish Department began managing deer in smaller units and issuing specific numbers of buck or doe licenses — for example, 38,000 total licenses in 1980 — some “want-to-be” deer hunters actually had to stay home.

ALWAYS IN SEASON: Eagles and Veterans Day go together

An American bald eagle perched in a tree along Interstate 29 on Wednesday. It seemed appropriate. Wednesday was Veterans Day, and the bald eagle is the symbol of American power. The eagle’s presence was coincidental, however. It happens that mid-November is eagle season in the Red River Valley.

DEER TALES: A Leg to stand on

Brother proves his mettle during long-ago hunting trip
A few more steps and we saw below us more than 20 deer up to their bellies in snow. Boy, did they stand out. At least eight of them were bucks. This was going to be some of the easiest shooting we had ever had — they were only 70 yards away.
