While boating on Upper Red Lake on Mother’s Day morning, CO Robert Gorecki (Baudette) and Lt. Pat Znajda observed a snowmobile skipping approximately a quarter mile of open water and turning around on the degraded ice pack. This continued for several minutes before the snowmobiler returned to shore. CO Gorecki later made contact with the snowmobiler and enforcement action was taken.
Fisheries officials plan to kill part of the cormorant population on Lake Vermilion in northeastern Minnesota because the lake's perch population has been falling, and they're worried that the decline could eventually harm the lake's walleye numbers.

The Rainy River is now open through Baudette and hundreds of boaters were out fishing for walleye during the final weekend of the spring season. Anglers continued to report fair fishing success, but long waits at public accesses to get onto the river.
CO Robert Gorecki (Baudette) reports that angling pressure on the Rainy River has increased dramatically throughout the week. The Rainy River has opened up through Vidas Landing east of Clementson, Minn., and more than 400 boats were observed fishing over the weekend.
Conservation officer Jeff Birchem (Baudette) continued to investigate a gray owl shooting and gave a wolf presentation to a local school. Heavy snow conditions on Lake of the Woods continue to hamper fish house removal.
CO Jeremy Woinarowicz (Thief River Falls) reported a routine snowmobile registration violation resulted in a felony fleeing incident. A short pursuit and follow up investigation resulted in pending felony charges and the seizure of the fleeing snowmobile.
CO Ben Huener (Roseau) worked anglers on Lake of the Woods from the south shore to the Northwest Angle with COs Birchem, Znajda, Gorecki and Sherack. Violations encountered included angling with extra lines, angling with unattended lines, possession of marijuana, angling without a license in possession, and possession of unmeasurable walleyes.
