Deer management begins and ends with does

Deer management begins and ends with does My guess is that most deer hunters don’t tire of the “Turdy Point Buck” tune on the radio until the backside of deer season. For a change, though, I’d sure enjoy listening to a refrain about hunting doe in North Dakota.

Last hurrah for football tail-gaters will be Saturday They have had a good workout. They have played the sport they love, and the UND Sioux football seniors always will remember their part in leading the way into Division I play. Curtain rises for hoops as golf courses close down

Curtain rises for hoops as golf courses close down Dear Shirley, You know how I go into withdrawal when basketball season ends? It always seems like there’s nothing to do and life is grim until it starts up again. Well, the time I wait for is here. The UND Sioux women already have played two exhibition games and the men have a game Sunday afternoon. It’s so much fun to see Kayla Bagaason shoot 3 pointers and watch Mallory Younglutt barreling down the floor on a mission. I wouldn’t want to get in her path.

ALWAYS IN SEASON: Start now if you plan to feed birds this winter

ALWAYS IN SEASON: Start now if you plan to feed birds this winter Today is the first day of November, and just about everybody with any experience in this part of the world expects winter to arrive some time in November. Maybe not. Snow isn’t a cinch even by Christmas. But cold weather is pretty much a certainty. So, this is just about the last chance to get your winter bird-feeding operation under way.

MATTERS AT HAND: Did Earl Pomeroy win in health care bill debate?

MATTERS AT HAND: Did Earl Pomeroy win in health care bill debate? It may be that Rep. Earl Pomeroy surrendered last week, when he said he would vote for a government insurance option as part of health insurance reform. Or, it may be that he won a significant victory. That’s a question we’ll hear about in the 2010 election campaign.

ANN BAILEY: Bring back civil discourse, accountability

ANN BAILEY: Bring back civil discourse, accountability I have little patience for people who say that they write nasty comments because everyone else does and that there’s no place for civil discourse. Just because other people sink to the level of personal attacks and name calling, doesn’t mean they have to do it, too.

No Smiley, but plenty of smiles for month of October

No Smiley, but plenty of smiles for month of October Sorry, there won’t be any questions about Smiley the water tower in the October News Quiz. That’s because the Herald has reached its self-imposed limit of writing no more than 1 billion words on any single subject. The last time any subject received as much media attention was in 1997, when we had some high water.

North Dakota chief justice takes dim view of TV’s Judge Judy So, what do you think of Judge Judy? The subject of the television judge came up when North Dakota Supreme Court justices were visiting Dakota Prairie School at Petersburg, N.D., on Tuesday. Chief Justice Gerald VandeWalle turned the question around and asked, “Well, what do you think of her?”

N.D. program ensures venison can be donated PressPass

N.D. program ensures venison can be donated Good news for North Dakota deer hunters this year is that the Sportsmen Against Hunger venison donation program is back in full operation Last year, the program accepted deer donated only by bowhunters because of concerns over the possibility of lead particles from bullets remaining in processed venison.

Financial meltdown affects bladders in Arizona PressPass

Financial meltdown affects bladders in Arizona Dear Shirley, I got your clipping from the Arizona Star. You know, the one where the woman was taking note of 13 of 18 state run rest stop stations being closed in Arizona because of the economy. And the writer to the newspaper said she knew the recession would affect her pocketbook, but not her bladder.

Weighing in

This morning, I was on my way to my Weight Watchers meeting and for once, I was not really looking forward to going. I had talked myself into not being disappointed when I stepped on the scale. I didn't have a very good week...remember, I couldn't get full. I was constantly eating and didn't do much

Seriously, as I write this, my tummy is still growling at me even though I just ate a small snack not more than 15 minutes ago. I ate my breakfast (yogurt and a Vitalicious m
