TRAVEL: Hanging, and hang gliding, in and around Chattanooga

TRAVEL: Hanging, and hang gliding, in and around Chattanooga My husband and I were on a quick getaway to Chattanooga, Tenn., which is just a few miles from Lookout Mountain. While Chattanooga may have a funny name, it is a fantastic place to visit — and if you’re plucky enough, to hang glide.

TRAVEL: Amsterdam in three parts: crazy, cultured and classic PressPass

It’s crazy, cultured and classic, a triptych, a puzzle. Some of it is sketchy. Most of it is culturally rich. Which is the “real” Amsterdam? Take your pick. On one hand, with its wafting pot smoke and bored prostitutes under glass, the city’s infamous Red Light District is still a prude’s nightmare and a rebel’s dream. On the other hand, any city that can claim Rembrandt, Van Gogh and Anne Frank is a must-see for even the most staid travelers.

TRAVEL: Berlin has roared back to life PressPass

The modern skyscrapers of Potsdamer Platz glisten in the sun. Stylish Berliners sip coffee in swanky sidewalk cafes. And the streets are packed with cyclists and tour buses. Hard to imagine this used to be the Death Strip. If you had tried to come here 20 years ago, you would have been shot.

TRAVEL: Montauk after the crowds: the rhythms of a quieter season PressPass

TRAVEL: Montauk after the crowds: the rhythms of a quieter season The Montauk Point Lighthouse was completed in 1796, less than two years after it was authorized by George Washington. But the eastern tip of Long Island always has been a beacon. And it becomes even brighter in autumn. The crowds depart and the appeal grows, whether you’re intent on recreation or ready for Montauk’s most seductive attraction — doing nothing.

TRAVEL: Coming back to New Orleans PressPass

With the glow from nine crystal chandeliers reflected in the gleaming marble-and-mosaic floor of its block-long lobby, the reopening of the historic Roosevelt Hotel puts a glittering exclamation mark on the comeback of New Orleans.

TRAVEL: Gettysburg gets an upgrade PressPass

Half solemn battlefield and half kitschy vacation spot, in 2013 Gettysburg will mark the 150th anniversary of the Civil War’s most famous battle. To prepare, it’s sprucing up. Upgrading. Showing off for 2.9 million annual visitors and preparing for even more attention.

TRAVEL: Victoria is worth a stop PressPass

A scenic ride aboard a Washington State ferry between Anacortes and Vancouver Island begins or ends in Sidney, a community of 11,000 that rarely rates more than a glance out the car window for visitors speeding along Highway 17 on their way to or from Victoria.

TRAVEL: Maine’s coastal area was as expected: wonderful PressPass

My preconceptions of visiting the Maine coast were right on the mark. As a Southerner, I figured there would be no grits. I was right. I pictured pretty and scenic fishing villages, towering forests, and miles of dramatic coastline. Right again.

TRAVEL: Grand Rapids, Mich.: A relaxed urban getaway PressPass

TRAVEL: Grand Rapids, Mich.: A relaxed urban getaway I’m sitting with my wife on the fringe of Rosa Parks Circle as a multiracial band blasts bluesy tunes for a small but very receptive crowd — it’s like a Dave Matthews concert in miniature — and it occurs to me that, for the slightly stressed Chicagoan, this western Michigan town represents the ideal urban getaway.

TRAVEL: Eight great things in Hong Kong PressPass

TRAVEL: Eight great things in Hong Kong I grew up hearing stories about Hong Kong. My parents lived there until they were teens, before moving to America. I knew that before a typhoon, cockroaches flew like mad in the skies. I knew that you could toss coins down to a street vendor and they would throw up a snack to your apartment window. I knew that housing could be so cramped in H-shaped tenements that a whole floor might share a bathroom. But all of that was based on memories from my parents growing up in the ‘50s and ‘60s. So when I visited Hong Kong for the first time, I didn’t know what to expect. Did the street vendors still launch food up buildings? The coins themselves had probably changed, too, since the city has been returned to China.

TRAVEL: Wisconsin Dells springs back to life PressPass

TRAVEL: Wisconsin Dells springs back to life Reports of the death of Wisconsin Dells’ tourism industry are greatly exaggerated. Last year’s draining of Lake Delton and the subsequent impact on tourist-related businesses is still on people’s minds, even though things are pretty much back to normal in this central Wisconsin community.
