FACES AND PLACES: John Reitmeier -- Man of the world

FACES AND PLACES: John Reitmeier -- Man of the world John Reitmeier can watch the world go by from his office.
Outside the window of Blue Marble Technology, the company he runs from his home near Crookston, Reitmeier can see a steady stream of farmers or equipment putting in and taking off crops and spraying or cultivating depending on the season

ANN BAILEY: Bring back civil discourse, accountability

ANN BAILEY: Bring back civil discourse, accountability I have little patience for people who say that they write nasty comments because everyone else does and that there’s no place for civil discourse. Just because other people sink to the level of personal attacks and name calling, doesn’t mean they have to do it, too.

ERIC BERGESON: Cleanliness has nothing to do with being moral and everything to do with morale

A study by three research psychologists released last week titled, “The Smell of Virtue,” claims to show that cleanliness is indeed next to godliness.

Making a memorable, tasteful best man speech

The most important component of your speech is not the words you choose to deliver, it is how you present them to your audience.

TRAVEL: Hanging, and hang gliding, in and around Chattanooga

TRAVEL: Hanging, and hang gliding, in and around Chattanooga My husband and I were on a quick getaway to Chattanooga, Tenn., which is just a few miles from Lookout Mountain. While Chattanooga may have a funny name, it is a fantastic place to visit — and if you’re plucky enough, to hang glide.

FACES & PLACES: Beating breast cancer PressPass

FACES & PLACES: Beating breast cancer Thirty-one-year-old Nicole Chine is living proof of the importance of raising awareness about breast cancer.
Three years ago on Oct. 4, Chine was about to leave a prenatal checkup when she noticed a pair of wooden breast cancer awareness beads hanging on the wall of the exam room. Seeing the beads reminded Chine that she had forgotten to mention to Betsy Hemler, the nurse-midwife, who had examined her, that she had felt a lump on her right breast during a self-examination.

ANN BAILEY: One step at a time PressPass

ANN BAILEY: One step at a time Sixteen months down and 10 to go.
Those numbers sum up the number of months Ellen, my 6-year-old daughter, has been in treatment for leukemia and how many she has left. In some ways those 16 months seem interminable and it’s difficult for me to recall what life was like before she was diagnosed.

ERIC BERGESON: Smear vs. online Boggle PressPass

Come to think of it, there is a big difference between online Boggle and Smear. You play online Boggle alone at home, staring at a screen. Smear, however, requires that you go to the cafe and develop some basic social skills like knowing when to swear and when to belch.

TRAVEL: Amsterdam in three parts: crazy, cultured and classic PressPass

It’s crazy, cultured and classic, a triptych, a puzzle. Some of it is sketchy. Most of it is culturally rich. Which is the “real” Amsterdam? Take your pick. On one hand, with its wafting pot smoke and bored prostitutes under glass, the city’s infamous Red Light District is still a prude’s nightmare and a rebel’s dream. On the other hand, any city that can claim Rembrandt, Van Gogh and Anne Frank is a must-see for even the most staid travelers.

Northern Valley Honor Flight (People)

One of the interesting things about reporting is getting to meet the people we meet.  Here are a couple I met on the Northern Valley Honor Flight to Washington.  *  At the World War II Memorial I met Orville Kofstad who said, "I've got something I want to give you
