FACES AND PLACES: Project inspires Scout to soar like an Eagle

FACES AND PLACES: Project inspires Scout to soar like an Eagle Playing in the outdoors came naturally to Alan Ashworth when he was a young kid. A child who felt closed in when he was inside four walls, Ashworth spent his time outside doing things like climbing trees, balancing on logs and swinging from a rope. Thanks to the 16 year old, children in Grand Forks now can do the same at a natural play area Ashworth built along the Greenway in Grand Forks.

ANN BAILEY: Chemotherapy treatment is a rigorous road to travel

ANN BAILEY: Chemotherapy treatment is a rigorous road to travel Before my 6-year-old daughter, Ellen, was diagnosed with leukemia I was in the dark about a lot of things connected with cancer. Though I had relatives and close friends with various types of the disease, I didn’t really understand what chemotherapy and radiation were, or how they are administered. TRAVEL: Joshua Tree National Park is an often-overlooked treasure

Joshua Tree, Big Bend, Capitol Reef, Isle Royale, Kenai Fjords and Theodore Roosevelt are national parks that may never be the stars of a Ken Burns documentary. But each offers its own charm, and you won’t find a traffic jam at any of them. In fact, Kenai Fjords in Alaska and Isle Royale in Lake Superior have no traffic at all; you explore them by boat or by sea plane.

ERIC BERGESON: Admiring Brett Favre

Good grief, Brett Favre is fun to watch when he’s on your side. The Vikings are loaded with talent, but in football all the talent in the world can waste away without an on-field leader to pull it together. Favre was the final piece to the puzzle, or so he has been for the first half of a very fun Vikings’ season.

Man’s model train layout is eight years in the making

A train and three rail cars sit in the tiny shadow of a water tower in Don Hughes’ workshop, causing him to smile. “That was the train that started it all,” he said, “the train on the track around the Christmas tree when I was a 3-year-old boy.” The boy and his train set have grown up together over the past 60 years. More than 500 Lionel and other models now line the tracks and shelves of Hughes’ 2,500-square-foot shop on his 6-acre homestead just north of Mansfield, Texas.

Denali needs a dog musher, a one-of-a-kind job

In the world of dog mushing, there aren’t many jobs with a steady paycheck. Professional mushers live off the bounty of their race earnings, dog breeding skills and marketing savvy. And within a federal government that employs 19.7 million people, there is one — exactly one — dog mushing job. And it’s open.
