Remembering the flood of '97: Red River breaks through 15 years ago today
Fifteen years ago today, on Friday, April 18, 1997, it became clear the Red River had won. Boils began to appear in the dike protecting Grand Forks’ Lincoln Park area around 4:15 a.m. Ordered by the city to evacuate before dawn, neighborhood residents, including 106 in the Almonte nursing home, left. A few blocks away, the surging river poured over a 12-foot-high dike on Lincoln Drive, roaring like a waterfall and threatening to blow open the dike.

Zeal for early Minnesota fishing opener fades
Time is running out to kick the Minnesota fishing opener up a week. Opinions about the issue are changing quickly, Sen. Bill Ingebrigtsen, R-Alexandria, said today after his environment and natural resources committee heard testimony that produced no strong support for the earlier openers. “The more people are weighing in on it, the more of a concern it became,” Ingebrigtsen said.

PRAIRIE GARDENER: Don’t jump the gun when it comes to early lawn work
Gardeners tend to jump the gun when it comes to lawn chores. Lawns normally are what get the attention once the snow melts and the brown turf begins peeking out from under winter’s snow banks. For many people, this means only one thing. Either get out the rake or even better, fire up the lawn mower and get the yard freshened up for the summer. However, sometimes we can do more damage than good if we jump the gun.

CAPITOL CHATTER: ‘Not exactly a pen pal letter’
The end of the 2012 Minnesota Legislature approaches amid strong partisan disagreements. House Speaker Kurt Zellers, R-Maple Grove, called a recent letter from Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton “snarky.” Dayton’s letter to Zellers and Senate Majority Leader Dave Senjem, R-Rochester, placed the blame squarely on them if a Vikings stadium, public works funding and Capitol building restoration fail this year.

Skittles joins food brands at center of tragedy
It could've been Starbursts, Twizzlers or Sour Patch Kids. But when Trayvon Martin was fatally shot, he happened to be carrying a bag of Skittles. Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company —the unit of Mars that owns Skittles— issued only a brief statement offering condolences to Martin's friends and family, adding that it would be inappropriate to comment further "as we would never wish for our actions to be perceived as an attempt of commercial gain."

N.D. oil output still rising, setting records
North Dakota’s crude oil production continues to set records as February’s output was pegged at averaging 558,254 barrels per day, up from the previous record of 546,318 in January, according to the state’s Department of Mineral Resources. Based on trends the past year, it's likely North Dakota's production this month will surpass Alaska's to make the state second-ranked behind Texas.
