VIRG FOSS: A sportswriter, but a terrible fan
"I have a confession to make," columnist Virg Foss writes. "As someone who has spent much of his life writing about sports and the people who play them, I am a terrible fan."

Foss: It’s been a week of rumors, speculation
I’ve been in journalism long enough to remember when the arrival of the portable typewriter made my job of covering a sporting event so much easier. How times have changed. And not always for the better.

VIRG FOSS: Readers weigh in on Sioux nickname
My column last week explored the fringes of why Fighting Sioux hockey is so huge in this area, and why the UND nickname and logo carry a profound and deep meaning to so many fans.

VIRG FOSS: We're loyal and we like it that way
It is difficult to pinpoint, why there is a such a deep loyalty among UND fans over the Fighting Sioux name. We’re tough up here. We live through blizzards, floods, and the bone-chilling temps of recent days. None of that kills us. Losing the Fighting Sioux name just might, though. You can take our first-born, our favorite family pets, we’ll tell you. Just don’t take away the Fighting Sioux name.

VIRG FOSS: Changes are in the wind
I’m like many of you, there’s nothing I look forward to more all year than the arrival of the Sioux-Gopher hockey series. But this could well be the last time the Gophers and Fighting Sioux meet under the team's current nicknames if the Fighting Sioux nickname is retired. That would be a shame.

DECADE OF DOMINANCE: Since opening Ralph Engelstad Arena, Sioux hockey continues to soar nationally
The best Christmas present ever for the UND men’s hockey program came in 1998. That’s when — a few days before the holiday — Ralph Engelstad came to Grand Forks to announce plans to finance an arena that would be looked upon as the best in the country.

Virg Foss commentary: Passion, success unite UND, Canadian hockey
"We in the United States have pro football, basketball, baseball, to split our loyalties. In Canada? What else is there except hockey? Curling, the CFL and polar bears?" columnist Virg Foss writes. "What amazes me is that Canadians are more passionate over their World Junior teams than they are when one of their NHL franchises play for the Stanley Cup."

Good ones passed away in 2010
“Dandy” Don Meredith used to cap the telecast of Monday Night Football on ABC with his trademark singing of the Willie Nelson song “Turn out the lights, the party’s over.” Sadly, the party ended for Dandy Don in 2010 as well. His name is on a lengthy list of sports figures, including Robin Roberts, Bob Feller, John Wooden and George Steinbrenner who passed away in 2010.

Virg Foss commentary: In a flash, life's path can be altered
I was reading a story the other day about Travis Roy. It hit home again how fleeting the fortunes of life are, how rapidly they change.

OUR OPINION: Sioux v. Bison: There is no substitute
For a rivalry that has been dead for six years, the Bison-Sioux matchup sure conjurs up a powerful ghost. That ghost bought nearly 11,000 tickets to the UND-North Dakota State University men’s basketball game in Fargo, the NDSU basketball program’s biggest-ever home draw.

Foss: North Dakota’s real rivalry resumes tonight
I find that for me, the Christmas season tends to sharpen the focus of what life can be like as a journalist. We’ve all opened Christmas presents that were not what we wanted or hoped for.

Foss: So, who will Sioux fans support?
In days long ago and a land far away, I’d sneak down to Fargo once or twice a year in the fall to watch the NDSU Bison play football. Those were the days of yesteryear when the Bison and the Sioux had this silly notion that having North Dakota’s two largest universities play each other in football was a great idea.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY: Sioux move into first
UND goalie Stephanie Ney hails from a town in the province of British Columbia with an unusual and distinct name — 100 Mile House. Her 22 saves Saturday night helped her team accomplish something very special as well.

Women's hockey: Sioux top St. Cloud State
It's not often that the winner sounds like the loser. Yet that was the tone coming from the UND Fighting Sioux women's hockey team Friday night after a less-than-satisfying 6-3 Western Collegiate Hockey Association victory over winless (0-12) St. Cloud State.

Foss: No regrets for this career
I sat in front of my computer in my cabin the other night, ideas for my next column spinning through my head, and wondering why. Not why I was at my cabin. There’s a giant magnet in my heart that pulls me here. That I understand.

VIRG FOSS: Change is constant in college athletics
As fall days migrate past my lake cabin like the flocks of geese winging by overhead, I practice a nightly ritual. Before I go to bed, I walk outside, stand on the shoreline and count the number of cabins across the lake with lights on.
