His senior year at North Dakota State University, Rick Berg met Jim Wieland, a guest speaker in one of his classes. Wieland had just launched a real estate investment and property management business. 2010 and 2011 data compiled by Praxis Strategy Group shows renters in Grand Forks are paying more than other major cities in North Dakota, though the numbers don’t show the recent uptick in rent prices in the western part of the state caused by the oil boom. From 2000 to 2010, the average rent payment in the city increased 32 percent, or about $155.
