COLUMNIST MARILYN HAGERTY: Billboards took chill off state’s image
“Stay in North Dakota. Montana is closed this week.” That was the message on one of the 30 billboards that were put up by the North Dakota State Tourism office 25 years ago. Another said, “Welcome to North Dakota. Open year-round.” And still another: “Stay in North Dakota. Custer was healthy when he left.”

No Smiley, but plenty of smiles for month of October
Sorry, there won’t be any questions about Smiley the water tower in the October News Quiz. That’s because the Herald has reached its self-imposed limit of writing no more than 1 billion words on any single subject. The last time any subject received as much media attention was in 1997, when we had some high water.

THE EATBEAT: Horski moves with music to present Sioux Fan luncheons

Sioux cheerleaders on ice in white and pink for weekend
Bring on the Minnesota Gophers! The 11 Sioux cheerleaders on ice are ready for them. They will be wearing white to help carry out the great whiteout theme for the weekend games, and they will have pink ribbons in their hair. That’s because of the effort for a weekend of awareness of breast cancer.

Sioux grind out win over Stony Brook
UND’s 31-24 Potato Bowl win against Stony Brook on Saturday in the Alerus Center likely won’t make many highlight reels. “It wasn’t pretty; it wasn’t a beauty contest,” UND defensive back Joel Schwenzfeier said. “In that style of game, you have to scrap and crawl for everything you get. But a win is a win.”
