Fire damages Grand Forks garage
Fire destroyed a garage near downtown Grand Forks early Tuesday morning, according to the fire department. The fire was reported just after 5:30 a.m. at 709 N. Third St. Smoke and fire were coming out of the building when firefighters arrived, the fire department said. They were able to get the fire under control within a few minutes.

MIDWAY SCHOOL: At the head of the class
Midway Public School in Inkster, N.D., is generally considered the first major school district consolidation in North Dakota history, in that it combined junior and senior high school students from nearly a half-dozen communities and the surrounding countryside. Its first class of 26 seniors graduated in spring 1962. Back then, it was one of the largest school districts in the state, said Superintendent Roger Abbe. Now, it's about average.

FOREST RIVER: Smaller flocks, solid faith for town's one church
In Forest River’s early years, it had three churches — Episcopalian, Presbyterian and Methodist. While the community traditionally has had several Catholic and Lutheran families, they have chosen to commute to church in nearby communities. The Episcopalian church closed its doors and, eventually, the remaining two consolidated with each other and sister churches nearby. “I was a Methodist one day and then I was told to be a Presbyterian,” said a church elder. “It was quite a change. But it works. We all get along great, and we always have.”

Police: Man shared drugs with Grand Forks teen who died
A Manvel, N.D., man has been arrested in connection to the June 11 death of a Grand Forks teen from a reported drug overdose. Police say a witness said Wesley Sweeney, 18, said he provided drugs to Christian Bjerk, 18, but it wasn’t his fault Bjerk overdosed. Sweeney was arrested Wednesday and charged with felony reckless endangerment in Bjerk's death and in the overdose of a 15-year-old boy.

Fire destroys house in Mekinock, N.D.
A fire early Wednesday afternoon destroyed much of a house at 361 Wright St. in Mekinock, N.D., according to the Emerado Fire Department. Around 25 firefighters from the Emerado, Gilby and Manvel volunteer departments arrived on the scene shortly after 1 p.m. to find smoke and flames coming through the top of the attic.
