RYAN BAKKEN: Exercise boom time for Boomers
Participation in Grand Forks’ adult softball leagues peaked in 1997. Yes, the year of the flood. That factoid seems strange, since some residents were still displaced and many others were busy gutting basements and remodeling. But John Staley, the Grand Forks Park District’s top executive, can explain the anomaly. “Softball provided a way to congregate,” he said. “There is value in socialization.”

No Vikings stadium vote Saturday
Dozens of Vikings fans decked out in purple jerseys rallied in the state Capitol Saturday, but went home disappointed after learning there would be no debate to build a new stadium. As the fans chanted “save our team” outside the House chambers, Gov. Mark Dayton and the Legislature’s Democratic-Farmer-Laborite leaders asked House Speaker Kurt Zellers to take up the bill right away. But House Republicans did not plan a debate Saturday.

Stadium bill survives tough committee fight
A Vikings stadium construction plan will receive a full Senate vote after what its Senate author described as a brutal Friday committee hearing lasting more than five hours. Sen. Julie Rosen, R-Fairmont, said she expects the plan to pass the Senate, which may take it up Sunday. “We fought back a lot of lousy amendments,” Rosen said. One of those proposed amendments was by Sen. John Howe, R-Red Wing, who ended up as the swing vote that allowed the Senate Tax Committee to approve the stadium bill 7-6.

Vikings players visit the Capitol as Senate panel adds racino to stadium funding
A Senate committee voted today to backup Vikings stadium funding by allowing horse-racing tracks to add casinos, a change the bill author said would kill the bill. New Vikings stadium bill will go to full House vote
The full Minnesota House will vote on whether to build a Vikings stadium. Tough questions continue even as the plan to build a stadium gained new life Monday night, a week after another committee rejected it. The Ways and Means Committee amended a stadium construction proposal onto another bill and then approved the full bill. Both decisions came in voice votes, with no official record of how committee members voted. Also Monday, the Senate scheduled a second stadium hearing for its version of the proposal. The Ways and Means decision to bring back the stadium plan sends the proposal to the full House for a likely vote this week. The vote was a complete turnaround from a week earlier, when another committee dealt the stadium plan a 9-6 defeat.

A Vikings stadium construction effort has fallen short for years, but a Friday meeting among NFL officials and Minnesota leaders produced the most progress so far.
