Minnesota deer hunting notebook: Hides for Habitat, Agassiz hunting etc.
The Minn-Dak Border Chapter of the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association again will be collecting deer hides for the Hides for Habitat program. Collection boxes will be located at Cabela’s, Orton’s on the Point and Sportsman Taxidermy Studio, all in East Grand Forks. Money raised from the campaign is used exclusively for habitat projects.

Dr. Dan Grove, wildlife veterinarian for Game and Fish in Bismarck, said deer heads will be collected from deer in units 1, 2A, 2B, 2C, 2D, 2E, 2F1, 2F2, 2G, 2G1, 2G2 and 2L. In addition, Game and Fish will sample deer from Unit 3F2 in the southwest after a mule deer taken last fall tested positive for CWD.

CO Angie Warren (Thief River Falls) handled calls including a sick fox, injured deer and deer depredation issues. With much of the area snow melted CO Warren worked areas for ATV activity. She also made preparations for the upcoming open water season, answered calls about a fish house still on a river, resulting in an ongoing investigation, and monitored activity at area public accesses.

The Game and Fish Department learned Wednesday that a sick-looking mule deer shot and reported last fall by a hunter in western Sioux County in far southwestern North Dakota had tested positive for the disease. The deer was an adult buck, and the positive diagnosis marks the first time CWD has been found in North Dakota.
