Area games to watch: Bearcats thriving with more balance

For the North Star boys basketball program, those declining averages from their all-staters are probably a good thing. Alton Horsley
Alton Horsley, 82, of Walhalla, ND passed away on Wednesday, January 30, 2013, at the Pembina County Memorial Hospital, Cavalier, ND. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 2, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. at the United Lutheran Church, Cavalier. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 1st from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the church. Burial in the Bruce Cemetery, Neche, ND.

Alton was born March 26, 1930, near Neche to Thomas and Ruby (Inglis) Horsley. He grew up in the Neche area where he attended school and also attended the Walsh County Agricultural School. Alton served in the U.S. Navy. After his discharge from the service he returned to the Neche area where he farmed. In 1959, he married Joyce Douville and they had three children. He was a member of the Neche American Legion Post.

Luella F. Gratton, 63, of Walhalla, ND passed away Monday, January 28, 2013, at home surrounded by her family and dog Dixie. Funeral services will be held Friday, February 1, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at the Walhalla Lutheran Church. Visitation will be held Thursday, January 31st from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the church. Memorials are preferred to Altru Cancer Center in Grand Forks.

Lue Hiller was born April 17, 1949, near Vang, ND to Fred and Bena (Johnson) Hiller. She grew up and attended school in Cavalier, graduating in 1967. She went on to attend Garth’s School of Hair Design and graduated in 1969. In 1970, she married Jay Padden, with whom she had three daughters. On May 7, 1990, she married Kelly Gratton with whom she had one daughter. She was a member of the Big Pembina Lutheran Church

Most anglers are fishing in 30 to 34 feet of water on the south end of the lake and catching a mixture of walleyes and saugers. Fishing has been spotty during the recent cold front; some walleyes are suspended, and anglers are catching more saugers than walleyes.

Houses continue to be spread out in 14 to 16 feet of water or 26 to 32 feet along the south shore. There’s been a lot of moving around taking place, with walleyes biting best in the afternoon and evening hours, while saugers continue to bite throughout the day.

Therese Benoit Charrier ,92,of Walhalla, ND passed away on Wednesday, January 9, 2013, at the Cavalier County Memorial Hospital, Langdon, ND. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 12, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Boniface Catholic Church, Walhalla. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 7:00 pm with a 7:00 pm rosary at the church on Friday, January 11th. Burial in the St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery.

Therese Emma Marcotte was born the 13th of 17 children to Irenee and Lea (Fontaine) Marcotte in St. Malo, Manitoba on October 18, 1920. On February 14, 1947, she married Richard Benoit and they farmed near Walhalla. Richard passed away in 1953. Therese moved into town and worked for Ed Lorenz in his insurance agency. This is where she met Louis Charrier. They were married in 1966, and combined their families in Landgon.

Lawrence W. “Joe” Howell, 88, of Leroy, ND passed away Sunday, January 6, 2013, at his home. Lawrence was born September 22, 1924, near Leroy to Percy and Rosa (Martineau) Howell. He grew up in the Leroy area where he attended school. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1944 to 1946, he returned home to the Leroy area. Joe worked for Pembina County for several years and for various contractors as a heavy equipment operator. From 1969 to 1988, he worked at Motor Coach Industries. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, and was an avid Minnesota Twins fan.

Saugers and walleyes are biting in 19 to 31 feet of water along the south shore. There’s been plenty of action and fish to bring home with the occasional trophy walleye, eelpout, pike, perch, sturgeon and tullibee mixed in, as well.

Ruby E. (Snedigar) McAllister, 95, Fargo passed away Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at the Palliative Care Unit of Sanford Health, Fargo.

Ruby was born March 5, 1917 in DeSmet, South Dakota to Arthur and Florence (Mullen) Snedigar. She graduated from Huron High School in 1933. She attended Huron College before marrying J.L. McAllister on January 24, 1939. The couple moved to Valley City, North Dakota in 1939 where Ruby worked as a bookkeeper at the lumber yard. They lived in Walhalla, North Dakota and Langdon, North Dakota where her husband managed the Penny’s Stores. She moved to Fargo in January 2009 and resided there until her death.
