UND HOCKEY: Legend Steenson dies
Moose Jaw native was captain of UND’s first national title team
Bill Steenson, the captain of UND’s first national championship team in 1959, has died, the school said Friday. Steenson played for the Sioux from 1956-59, earning a selection as a first-team All-American all three seasons. He remains the only Sioux player to be picked as a first-team All-American three times.

VIRG FOSS: From four seasons to two
We know all about the four seasons of the year and, for certain, the fans that can’t escape the rapid order in which sports seasons follow each other. But in retirement, I’ve learned that my life basically breaks down into two seasons — writing season, and non-writing time.

VIRG FOSS: This loss will sting for a long, long time
Part of the job description of a journalist is someone who is talented at stringing words together, accurately and with a flair for making the written word sing. I fail that description miserably today. I am at a loss for words after watching North Dakota’s magical hockey season end in a brutally painful 2-0 defeat to Michigan on Thursday night in the NCAA Frozen Four.

VIRG FOSS: Time will tell about this Sioux team
Mirror, mirror on the wall, Which is the greatest Sioux team of all? It’s a debate without a winner, a question without an answer.

FOSS: WCHA will do just fine without Gophers, Badgers
When Penn State found its version of a deep pockets Ralph Engelstad to fund a new hockey rink and begin D-I hockey on campus, we all knew a Big Ten Conference was inevitable.

VIRG FOSS: Taking a stand gets results
It’s one thing to be a loyal and valued employee of a great university, which UND men’s hockey coach Dave Hakstol certainly is. When what you believe in contradicts with the actions being taken by your bosses, it takes a man of courage to stand up for those beliefs.

Foss: With age comes some restraint
There’s an old saying that age has its benefits. As I shuffle into older age, I’ve learned that senior status can get you 10 percent off your food bill when eating out. If you can swallow your pride and ask for it, the savings are there.

N.D. STATE HOCKEY NOTEBOOK: A Mr. Hockey behind the bench
Stockert returns to claim his place in history
Matt Stockert never set state scoring records or played on a state championship team as a high school hockey player in North Dakota. But he has two claims to fame — he’s the state’s first winner of the Mr. Hockey Award (1991) and the only winner of that high school award to come back and rise to head coach in the state.

WOMEN'S HOCKEY: UND 5, Minnesota 3
"We couldn’t script it any better,” UND women’s hockey coach Brian Idalski said Saturday night. No kidding. His comment was about his first recruit to UND, senior Stephanie Roy, scoring what proved to be the game-winning goal in her last game in Ralph Engelstad Arena. Or it could refer to the Fighting Sioux scoring an impressive and important 5-3 Western Collegiate Hockey Association victory over the Minnesota Gophers.
