St. Michael's celebrates its centennial
For nearly 50 years, Ethel Mohn has occupied the best seat in St. Michael’s Catholic Church. That’s how long she has played the pipe organ from the choir loft, 28 steps up from the main floor. “It’s delightful from up there. It’s probably as close as I’ll ever get to heaven,” the 87-year-old joked.

She slips her son’s military dog tags around her neck every day. Every night, a leather pouch containing letters he wrote home from Vietnam lies within reach on a nightstand by her bed. Every Memorial Day, she leads four generations to the grave of her first-born, Marine Lance Cpl. Robert “Skip” Bye, in Crookston’s Oakdale Cemetery. Monday will be their 40th reunion there.

During a traffic stop in February 2008, Jason Hickman was made to stand in a 42-below-zero wind chill with no jacket, hat or gloves as two officers sat nearby in heated squad cars exchanging computer messages. David O’Toole wrote to Eric Straus: “That’s right make him freeze.” Straus’ reply: “Yep that boy has earned it over the years here.”
