Idalski says Sioux inching toward nation’s best
UND women’s hockey coach Brian Idalski returned from the NCAA Frozen Four in Duluth with a message for his team: They weren’t that far away from winning it all. “I don’t think a big chunk of our roster realized how close we were to being national champions,” Idalski said. “That got lost because of the way we went out against Minnesota.”

As UND’s Fighting Sioux hockey team heads back to St. Paul for the NCAA tournament this weekend, two extra “referees” will be watching: the NCAA itself, which has banned the beleaguered nickname and logo from tournament play, and the state of North Dakota, which by law requires that the team be known as the Fighting Sioux.

UND WOMEN'S HOCKEY: Sioux season comes to an end at hands of Gophers
UND’s first venture into the world of NCAA tournament women’s hockey may have had a different feel for the Sioux. Unfortunately for the Sioux, it didn’t have a different result against a familiar opponent. A week after the Gophers blanked UND in the WCHA Final Four, Minnesota again rolled past the Sioux, this time 5-1 in the NCAA quarterfinals Saturday before 1,630 fans at Ridder Arena.

The Sioux play rival Minnesota for the fourth time in 22 days at 4 p.m. today — this time with a berth to the NCAA Frozen Four on the line.

The Sioux killed off all five Bemidji State power plays Saturday and have now held the Beavers scoreless on their last 33 power-play chances dating back to November. UND WOMEN'S HOCKEY: UND 3, Bemidji State 1
UND had reason to feel good about the start of the WCHA women’s playoff series against Bemidji State on Friday. The Sioux led 2-0 late in the first period on goals by Kelsey Ketcher and Candace Molle. But as the first-period horn sounded, UND’s top scorer — Jocelyne Lamoureux — was called for checking from behind and received a game misconduct. UND, however, didn’t change its style with the loss of Lamoureux, also the country’s leading scorer. The no-change philosophy helped lead the Sioux to a 3-1 win in Game 1 of the best-of-three series at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
