Marvin D. Burns, age 89 of Grafton, ND passed away on Friday, March 15, 2013 at the Altru Hospital of Grand Forks.

Marvin D. Burns, the son of the late Patrick C. and Alice Mary (Callahan) Burns, was born June 6, 1923 in Grafton, ND. He grew up and attended school in Auburn. Following his education, he began farming with his dad and brothers. He served in the US Navy in WWII. Following his discharge he returned to Auburn to continue farming. While farming was his true passion, he also worked as a lineman for the Rural Electric Association, at the starch plant and Borden's in Grafton, and for American Crystal in Drayton. He was united in marriage to Shirley Torkelson on July 21, 1946. The couple made their home on the family farm near Auburn. Marvin retired from farming in 2006, and the couple moved into Auburn in 2009.

Alpha Mae Aaser
Alpha Mae Aaser, 90, of McVille, ND, died Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at Nelson County Health System-Care Center in McVille.

Alpha was born June 6, 1922 near Pekin, ND the daughter of Adolph and Anna Marie (Thompson) Lysne. She grew up at the family farm south of McVille. Alpha graduated from Pekin High School and worked for a time in Fargo, ND before returning to the McVille area. She married Morris Aaser on June 3, 1945 after Morris returned from WWII, and they began farming on the Lysne family farm. They were married 67½ years. In 1977 they moved to their new home in McVille.

Clifford Wayne Hackett, 90, of Fargo, formerly of Sarles, ND, died Saturday March 9, 2013 at home.

Wayne was born May 14, 1922 in Hannaford, ND and lived for his first three months at the Crittenden Home in Fargo. At age 3 months a nurse transported him on the train to Sarles, where he was adopted by JB and Jennie (Osborn) Hackett, and lived most of his life, until moving in 2005 to Fargo.

Russell Swenson, 86, of Karlstad, Minnesota passed away on Thursday, February 28, 2013 at Kittson Memorial Hospital in Hallock, Minnesota. Russell Magnus Swenson was born February 2, 1927 to August and Cora (Shurson) Swenson in Jupiter Township of Kittson County. He graduated from Karlstad High School in 1945 and went on to attend North Dakota State University. Russell served with the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1946. On December 19, 1964 he was united in marriage to Ruth Lundquist Henry at Eidsvold Lutheran Church in Halma, Minnesota. The couple lived in Halma for a couple of years before moving to the farm in Jupiter Township. They moved into Karlstad in 2012. Ruth passed away on March 11, 2012. Russell was a member of the Eidsvold Lutheran Church and served as trustee on the church council and was a charter member of the Halma-Lake Bronson American Legion. James J. “Joe” Martindale, 76, of Cavalier, ND passed away Monday, February 25, 2013, at Sanford Palliative Care, Fargo, ND due to surgical complications. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 2, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at the Cavalier Presbyterian Church, Cavalier, ND. Visitation will be held Friday, March 1st from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the church.

Joe was born November 11, 1936 to Joseph and Laura Mae (Stockton) Martindale at the Deaconess Hospital in Grafton, ND. After Joe’s parents died, he lived with his Uncle Tom and Aunt Violet Martindale on a farm near Bathgate, ND. He attended school in Bathgate. After school, he was a PFC in the US Army stationed in California and Panama, serving for three years. He began working in law enforcement as a city policeman for the City of Cavalier. In 1969, he became a Pembina County Deputy Sheriff under the guidance of Sheriff Glen Wells. Joe served as deputy from 1969 to 1973 and Chief Deputy from 1973 to 1987. In 1987, he was elected Pembina County Sheriff and held that position, retiring January 1, 2003. Joe also farmed the family land near Bathgate.

Gerald (Jerry) Harlow
Gerald (Jerry) Harlow, 77, of Drayton, North Dakota passed away at Valley Memorial Center in Grand Forks on Monday evening, February 25th, 2013 after a short courageous battle with cancer.

Jerry was born March 6, 1935 at Drayton to Theodore and Irma (McKeever) Harlow. He attended grade school in Drayton and high school in Crookston, Minnesota. On April 5, 1953 he married Marjorie Cox at Grafton. He entered the U.S. Army in 1954 serving 2 years in the Korean War. Jerry worked for Raney Farms of Drayton, Boeing in California, Ryan Farms in Gilby, North Dakota and the Drayton Elevator. In 1967 he moved his family to Cavalier, North Dakota and worked for Cominco and Simplot as manager until his retirement in 1991. After retirement Jerry and Marge moved back to Draytonto live on the Harlow family farm. He farmed for a few years and enjoyed helping neighbors with sugar beet harvest. Jerry and Marge spent the past 17 years wintering in Edinburg, Texas. Jerry is a member of the Drayton United Methodist Church and the Drayton American Legion. He also served many years on the Lincoln Township Board. Jerry enjoyed socializing with family and friends, reading and going for rides in the country. He also enjoyed camping and deer hunting.

Amos D. Larson, age 90, of Stephen, MN, died Tuesday, February 19, at the Valley Memorial Homes facility in Grand Forks, ND.

Amos was born on February 14, 1923, in Argyle, MN, the son of Edgar and Laura (Melo) Larson. Amos graduated from Stephen High School and attended Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, where he played half-back for the Cobber football team. He served during World War II in the Aviation Branch of the United States Navy and was stationed in the South Pacific’s Mariana Islands. Amos was united in marriage to Mercedes Bonnevieve (Bonnie) Olson on November 17, 1951, at the East Emmaus Church in Jupiter Township near Kennedy, MN. Amos farmed in Donnelly and Sinnoth Townships until he retired from farming in 1976.

John M. “Jack” Woods, age 82 of Forest River, ND passed away on Sunday, February 24, 2013 at Altru Hospital of Grand Forks.

John M. Woods was born August 10, 1930 in Grafton, ND the son of the late Walter and Myra (Jamieson) Woods. He graduated from Forest River High School in 1948 and attended the North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton, ND and later attended the North Dakota Agricultural College in Fargo. He served in the United States Army, serving in Korea. Following his discharge in 1954 he returned to Forest River. Jack was united in marriage to Margaret Roe on July 30, 1955 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Ardoch, ND. The couple made their home in Forest River where Jack farmed with his brother Robert until retiring in 1993.
