BRAD DOKKEN: Walleye opener is all about tradition
Minnesota’s fishing opener isn’t the big event for me that it is for some anglers. I’ll likely wet a line at some point next weekend, but it will depend on the weather. That’s not to say the Minnesota opener hasn’t produced some great memories. Here are five that stand out:

The nicer-than-usual weather in March had most area race fans believing an early start to the season was in store. As always in racing, weather dictates when racing will occur. Mild winter may, or may not spawn more skeeters
The relatively mild winter has some people wondering if mosquitoes, especially the West Nile virus-carrying Culex Tarsalis, will be out for blood this year. But entomologists and vector-control experts say skeeter counts are influenced by much more than mild weather, and it may be too early to tell what summer will bring.

ANN BAILEY: Springing ahead, but not too much
A month ago, I thought I might break the record for earliest lawn mowing. The green lawn was showing signs of bolting and I figured it would only be a matter of time before I was back on the seat of the mower.
