VIRG FOSS: 'Lipstick Bandit' conjures up fond memories
Sometimes words take on a life of their own in the most unexpected fashion. That’s what happened with my column of a week ago in the Herald. It was about the 1955 freshman basketball team at South Junior High in Grand Forks and my role as the “lipstick bandit.”

VIRG FOSS: After 57 years, Lipstick Bandit revealed
The recent incident involving vandalism of a locker room by two Grand Forks Red River basketball players prompted my decision to unburden myself of this deep, dark, dirty secret. The two players who did some damage to the room at Wahpeton High School following Red River’s first loss of the season, a buzzer-beating basket at that, will be punished with suspension and by having to pay for the damage. In 1955, under the stern but sensible discipline of Floyd Nelson, I suffered my fate in relative obscurity after my own destructive deed.

VIRG FOSS: The search for answers continues
I watched with great interest this week as Sioux coach Dave Hakstol made a strong public statement that the ramifications of keeping the name at UND may come with too great a cost to the school. As staunch a supporter as he has been over the years for the name and logo, one could see the agony within him in reaching that decision.

VIRG FOSS: A question with no easy answer
Not since Warroad’s Cal Marvin and a few friends talked athletic director Glenn “Red” Jarrett into sanctioning a men’s hockey team at UND 55 years ago has anyone made such a dramatic impact on the program as the Lamoureux twins.

VIRG FOSS: A Nickel for your thoughts
Slowly but surely, the Hatfields and McCoys of North Dakota are learning to get along, though hostility remains. We’re talking NDSU and UND athletics, of course, fresh off UND’s victory over NDSU in men’s basketball earlier this week.

VIRG FOSS: Remembering the losses from 2011
It’s been a tradition in this last column of 2011 to remember individuals who made a mark on my life and who passed away this calendar year. I’ve always felt sadness, of course, thinking of those who I’ve lost in the past years. Those feelings are certainly mixed with gratitude for the richness they’ve added to my life as these friends of different shades strolled through it.

Mike Petterson, Underwood, Minn., letter: A ‘thank you’ to two timeless writers
A few hours after I write this on Christmas Eve morning, my daughters, their husbands and my grandchildren all will be here. It will be great. But, I’ve already had a great Christmas thanks to Marilyn Hagerty and Virg Foss.

VIRG FOSS: One sweet Swede
If we live long enough, it's a given that at some point, we will bury our parents. A week ago today, my mother, Maebel Foss Otteson, passed away in Northfield, Mn., with my sister and I by her side. Suddenly, my whole world turned inside out.

VIRG FOSS: Blais hasn't lost his touch
One of the great joys of working with Dean Blais when he was head hockey coach at UND was dealing with the unexpected. hether it was the brutal honesty that came from his mouth or his 1997 team that came out of nowhere to win a national championship, one came to expect the unexpected from Blais.

VIRG FOSS: Without the nickname, it’ll be awkward
Fighting Sioux, Fighting Sioux, Fighting Sioux, Fighting Sioux, Fighting Sioux, Fighting Sioux, Fighting Sioux. There will soon come a time when those words cannot be written by journalists reporting on UND games anywhere in Grand Forks.

VIRG FOSS: This UND team still searching for an identity
Will the real UND hockey team please stand up and be recognized? And soon? Having been close to college hockey for more than 40 years as a reporter and fan, I’ve been able to pick up on the identity of a team fairly early in the season more often than not. But 14 games into this season, I can say I have no clue what the trademark of this team is, or will be.

VIRG FOSS: Life is good for me, indeed
For every meal, I need to blend my dog Ole’s food into liquid because of a disorder he was born with that makes swallowing difficult. Yet I love that little rascal for all the joy he’s given me in the two years since I adopted him when he was six. It is that time of the year when we make plans to spend a day or two with family and friends, count our blessings and give thanks.

VIRG FOSS: Eddie ‘The Eagle’ always remained loyal
Gino Gasparini wanted to bring Ed Belfour to UND at mid-season the year before when starting goalie Scott Brower struggled. Belfour refused. He wouldn’t leave his teammates on the Winkler (Man.) Flyers with the season in progress. That’s when I first saw how loyalty personified Belfour as much as his great goaltending.

LETTER: A new UND logo is already here
The current “ND” is not unique, but the widespread logo with UND, containing the flame inside the D, has to be the only one of its kind. Need we look any further for a logo? We already have it under our noses.

VIRG FOSS: Just North Dakota — no new nickname needed
One can argue forever whether the state of North Dakota or UND did all it could to retain the Fighting Sioux name and logo. It really doesn’t matter now. Unless the Spirit Lake Sioux Nation wins its lawsuit against the NCAA (now that’s a four-letter word) and a miracle happens, soon we are Fighting Sioux no more.

VIRG FOSS: Nickname issue far from over
It’s football season, so it’s only fitting the state steps up and kicks the old ball around a bit longer. It’s what will happen Monday when the North Dakota Legislature meets in special session. Our politicians are expected to repeal the state law they passed earlier in the year mandating that the University of North Dakota keep the Fighting Sioux nickname.

VIRG FOSS: UND hockey season may be the 'most wonderful time of the year'
Everyone has their favorite times of the year. A lot of them are wrapped around official holidays. The Christmas season might top the list of favorite holidays, but Thanksgiving, the July 4th celebrations, Labor Day, Memorial Day and Easter will get votes, too. We’re not celebrating any of those special holidays right now, yet I absolutely love this time of the year.

VIRG FOSS: 'Unsettled times ahead for college hockey'
Hard to say what implications conference shifting will have
Someone asked the other day what I thought about the formation of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference beginning with the 2013-14 season and UND’s role in it. Truth be told, I’m not exactly turning cartwheels.
