Richard Shafer, Grand Forks, letter: Tea Party participants drink from government cups
I assume all of those in attendance traveled on our excellent system of public-funded roads and highways. Many of the protesters appeared old enough to be getting Social Security and Medicare.

Richard Shafer, Grand Forks, column: N.D. should reject Utah's religious intolerance
The intrusion of religion into issues of civil and human rights is a normal part of living in Utah. Perhaps this is why as a North Dakotan, I find it irritating and disappointing to experience the regressive attitudes in the state with regard to extending full rights to its gay and lesbian citizens.

Richard Shafer, Grand Forks, letter: A sad milestone in N.D.’s press history
I regret Forum Communication’s policy of crafting such editorial endorsements at its headquarters for all its company newspapers. This breaks a very long and honorable tradition of editorial independence for the Herald, and I believe it lessens democracy in the state.

Gene Theroux, Grand Forks, letter: Writer's bias mustn't creep into classroom
John McCain is a real American hero. To try to connect him to alleged misconduct by our military in a bygone war is a typical left-wing approach to a fact that is undisputed. That fact is this: Again, McCain is an American hero.

Since he missed out on History 101, let me be so bold as to inform him of several facts: All wars are cruel. All wars are vicious. Unfortunately, servicemen and innocent civilians die.

LETTER: No taxation without representation: A response to 'Much ado about nothing'
After reading the letter to the editor on April 06, 2008 called "Much ado about nothing," I felt compelled to respond. The all American cry of "no taxation without representation" immediately sprang to mind as I worked my way through this letter. I apologize ahead of time that this letter is long, but felt that correcting misconceptions and addressing falseness was more important than brevity.

VIEWPOINT: The conscience of a Yellow Dog Democrat
GRAND FORKS - The 2008 presidential campaign is inducing that familiar pre-election anxiety that I'll have to enter an election booth in November and vote for a new president of the U.S. I have been a Yellow Dog Democrat since the 1960s. I am as unlikely to vote for a Republican as a Minnesota Vikings fan is to root for the Packers.

IN THE MAIL: Boost CAFE standards like Dorgan says
PIERRE, S.D. I am alternately pleased and disappointed. Pleased that Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., has called the bluff of the big three automakers regarding their terribly misleading campaign, which is aimed at blocking corporate average fuel economy, or CAFE, standards that would increase fuel efficiency of American-made vehicles.
