LLOYD OMDAHL: Considering solutions for signature fraud
Since my discussion on signature fraud in the initiative and referendum process appeared two weeks ago, Secretary of State Al Jaeger and I have been exchanging notes about the problem and likely solutions. Initially, I cited the incarceration of a petition leader for signature fraud in 1960. Jaeger has added a few more incidents, noting that his office has prosecuted petition fraud in 1994, 2006 and 2008.

LLOYD OMDAHL: Considering solutions for signature fraud
The adoption of the initiative and referendum was based on the idea of citizen involvement, with people carrying petitions for causes in which they personally believed. Payment for signatures and out-of-state sponsorship certainly dilute this philosophy.

OUR OPINION: A new and exciting landscape for higher ed
Last week was one of the most important in the recent history of higher education in North Dakota. That means UND and North Dakota State University, and that means Grand Forks, Fargo and the rest of the valley, too. The State Board's actions this week dramatically reform the system, very likely for the better.

LLOYD OMDAHL: History warns Legislature about initiatives
Because North Dakotans consider the initiative and referral processes as sacred, the Legislature would be well-advised to consider carefully and cautiously any proposals that would change the system.

LLOYD OMDAHL: N.D. must budget oil money with foresight
North Dakota doesn’t have to be the vacant spot on the map that native son Eric Sevareid once declared. But to be a bigger and better state in the future, we need bigger and better thinking about long-term goals.

LLOYD OMDAHL: Signature fraud rescues resource proposal
With the measure removed from the ballot, the sponsors may have dodged defeat at the polls. They now have time to strengthen their case and review provisions of their constitutional amendment that could have been fatal.

LLOYD OMDAHL: Nonvoters give excuses for nonparticipation
According to USA Today, 90 million people — 45 percent of the electorate — will not vote in the upcoming November election. Among them will be 175,000 North Dakotans, or 35 percent of our eligible electorate.

LLOYD OMDAHL: Don't let money ruin initiated measures
The initiative process has always been seen as a tool for the ordinary citizen. This idea was violated when it became known that several of the organizations proposing measures had obtained signatures through hired solicitors. While the move was relatively harmless on this occasion, it augurs ill for the initiative and referendum in the future.

LLOYD OMDAHL: Can North Dakota handle being rich?
With a flood of oil money into the state treasury, the question must be raised about the ability of North Dakota to handle the challenge of unexpected wealth. One thing for sure, it will change the dialogue in the state Legislature.

N.D. higher ed can't afford any more scandals
A month hardly goes by without some scandal at a North Dakota institution of higher learning appearing on the front pages of the state’s newspapers. And, after the roughing-up in the last session of the Legislature, higher education can’t afford any more scandals.

LLOYD OMDAHL: Weighing in on America’s obesity problem
During World War II, everyone was encouraged to raise a Victory Garden. We ran Hitler down a hole with carrots, beets and cabbage. And if Victory Gardens could win the war against fascism, they could win the war against fat.

LLOYD OMDAHL: Hoping for salvation in 2012 politics
I would have expected that drugs, alcohol, materialism, pornography, media smut, abortion, shacking up, exploitation and greed would be high on the list, but they were near the bottom. My list of immoralities has become outdated.

LLOYD OMDAHL: Three who made N.D. a better place
While many North Dakotans have made significant contributions to the state and communities, the efforts of three such individuals deserve special mention upon their passing. In some ways, their unique contributions have gone unnoticed.

LLOYD OMDAHL: Looking for the causes of polarization
We are in the current policymaking mess because the polarized public is being heard, and this polarization is being reflected by our leaders. Stated in classic Pogo wisdom: “We have met the enemy, and they is us.”

Dave Lambeth, Grand Forks, column: Add ‘conservation’ to N.D.’s priority list
My column is not to urge that we turn back the clock. Rather, it is to urge that we look at the natural areas we still have and ask two questions: How can we ensure the survival of the best of what is left? And how can we best manage our grassland, wetland and water resources over the long term?
