BOOTY CALL: Duluth company cushions sled dogs' steps
You could say the suiting up process for the 390-mile John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon along Minnesota's North Shore kicking off this Sunday begins in a backroom of the Goodwill building along Duluth's Garfield Avenue. That’s where Louise Russell and other women work at sewing tables making dog booties out of colorful stacks of tough fabric.

Winter can’t come too soon for people with sled dogs
Helen Corlew has never met a dog she didn’t like or couldn’t handle. She has met a few she is afraid of, and she knows how to turn her head and back away.

Dear Nancy Yoshida,
I have been browsing the Internet, and I see you still are following your dream of running your sled dogs in the 2009 Idatrod. More power to you.

Birthdays roll around every four years for Pat Fisher
This is not a common year. It is a leap year. And this is leap year's day. As far as I can tell, things would be a mess if we didn't have this extra day every four years. It keeps our calendar in sync with astronomic or seasonal years.

Late winter snow makes sled dogs mighty happy
She told me when to lean left or lean right with the turns. After a while, I was comfortable on a sled pulled by 10 dogs with Nancy Yoshida behind me in the driver seat hollering, “Haw,” and “Gee.” She would shout, “Easy,” when she wanted the dogs to slow down and “Whoa” when they were supposed to stop.
