OUR OPINION: Shirvani’s right: N.D. universities need more oversight
Hamid Shirvani, the North Dakota University System’s new chancellor, has promised increased oversight. And if UND President Robert Kelley and the system’s other CEOs are smart (which they are), they’ll welcome Shirvani’s initiative because it’s exactly what the system needs.

ND university officials: Many concerns in recent audit are ‘common practice’
Many of the issues raised in a scathing audit of how NDSU and the UND have spent student fees are simply “common practice” in higher education and not a sign of problems, North Dakota University System Chancellor Hamid Shirvani told a group of legislators Thursday.

OUR OPINION: Peer-group comparisons can mislead on wages
For management, the central question is not how much others are paying. That’s always and everywhere a recipe for “more,” given the fact that there always are Joneses to keep up with. Instead, the central question is this: What do I have to pay to both keep my good workers from jumping ship and to attract new workers when I need them?

N.D. professors’ earnings jump in recent years, but still below comparable institutions
Nationwide data on faculty salaries updated earlier this month by The Chronicle of Higher Education underscores the dueling narratives: North Dakota professors earn a living many people would consider quite comfortable. Will North Dakota reaffirm its commitment to hosting two strong and academically independent research universities? Or will it hobble one of those schools — and in so doing, quash the independence and authority that has so empowered the other?

Higher salary for new chancellor
If money talks, the loudest voice in the North Dakota University System will belong to its new chancellor. Hamid Shirvani, the California State University-Stanislaus president who accepted the job this week, will start at a salary between $340,000 and $350,000 — about $100,000 more than the outgoing chancellor’s compensation. It’ll be the highest salary of any employee in the system, a distinction that comes with expectations that Shirvani will bring a stronger presence to the role. “We want a st
