Dennis Lamarr Dagen
Dennis Lamarr Dagen of Warroad, MN passed away on Saturday, May 18, 2013 at the age of 86. Dennis was born April 29, 1927 to Erwin and Helen Dagen on a farm in Kittson County, MN. He attended a one room country school until high school. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy at age 17 on August 15, 1944. He served in World War II on the USS Curtis and USS Norton Sound in Shanghai, China and in Okinawa in 1945 when the atomic bombs were dropped on Japan. Dennis was baptized by a U. S. Navy Chaplain while on ship. He was honorably discharged on June 19, 1946. He returned to his home town of Karlstad, MN and attended high school. He enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Forces on March 13, 1948 and was attached to the 1503rd Military Air Transport Service. He served in Tokyo, Japan and when he returned home on leave, married Joan May Carlson on April 12, 1949. While stationed in Tokyo, the Korean War began. His assignment included off loading wounded soldiers for transport to the hospital. When not on duty, he boxed and was 1949 heavyweight champion for pacific services. He also coached boxing and basketball teams and enjoyed being a referee. Dennis was assigned to serve in South Korea, Guam, the Philippines, and Thailand and returned to Okinawa for his final years in the Air Force. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant on September 1, 1966. During his military service, Dennis received the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and National Defense Service Medal with 1 Bronze Star, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal (Japan).
In February 1967, Dennis joined the Roseau County Sheriff’s Department as Deputy in Warroad, MN. Many people in the community can attest that he fairly and efficiently enforced the law. Also, he became an avid golfer and enjoyed his time on the course with his sons and the “Rat Pack”. He retired as Deputy in February 1984.
