Maurice Bertilrud
Maurice Alvin Bertilrud, son of Mikkel and Annie (Everson) Bertilrud, was born February 5, 1929, rural Greenbush. He attended Greenbush School graduating in 1947. He served in U.S. Army 1951-1953.

He married Arlene Carlson on June 26, 1954 at Karlstad, MN. He was the Administrator of the Greenbush Hospital and Nursing Home for 29 years, retiring in 1988. Maurice was involved in the Greenbush community serving on the city council, the local school board and the Bethel Lutheran Church Council. He was a charter member of the Greenbush-Badger Lions Club and a member of the Greenbush American Legion Post 88.

Irene M. Sweeney
Irene M. Sweeney age 85 of Grand Forks, ND formerly of Manvel, ND and Walhalla, ND died peacefully Saturday April 13, 2013.

Irene Marie Jackson was born August 28, 1927 the daughter of Archie and Pauline (Furstenau) Jackson in Walhalla. She graduated from Walhalla Public School in 1945. She worked for Sheppard Telephone Company in Walhalla and Northwestern Bell and the Grand Forks Clinic in Grand Forks as a telephone operator. Irene married John A. Sweeney on November 5, 1952 in St. Boniface Catholic Church, Walhalla. The couple resided in rural Manvel where they farmed and raised five children. After the passing of John, Irene moved to Parkwood Place in Grand Forks in 1997.

Duane Field
Duane Field, 68, of Langdon, ND, passed away April 10, 2013, at the Maple Manor Care Center of Langdon, ND after a courageous battle with brain cancer.

Duane Earl Field was born December 4, 1944 at Langdon, ND, to Earl and Bessie (McFarlane) Field. He grew up and was educated in Langdon. Duane went on to attend the Wahpeton State School of Science before enlisting in the United States Army in 1964. He was stationed in Okinawa, then a short time in Hawaii before Vietnam. Duane was awarded the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Duane's family teased him that he earned the Expert Rifle Badge, but couldn't always get his deer. Duane returned to the area upon his discharge from active duty in 1966 and began work at Christie Motors. He held this position for 46 years until his health forced him to retire on December 31, 2012. Duane was united in marriage to Joanne Haugen on June, 19, 1970. They made their home in Langdon and became the loving parents of two sons. Duane was an active Mason in the Lebanon Lodge of Langdon, ND. He was a 33rd Degree Scottish Rite, a Kem Temple Shriner, and was a member of the American Legion Post #98, the Langdon Eagles Club and United Lutheran Church. Mostly he enjoyed spending time with his family and especially the grandchildren. Duane loved to hunt and enjoyed his annual fishing trip. He enjoyed Tuesday night golfing in the summer and curling in the winter months. He enjoyed being outside in his yard, and spending time with Metallica the dog.

Henry R. Vasek
Henry R. Vasek , 85, of Tabor, MN died Sunday April 7, 2013 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND following unexpected complications after heart surgery.

Henry Robert Vasek was born on December 23, 1927 the son of Frank and Bertha (Gust) Vasek in Northland Township, rural Tabor, MN. Henry proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1945-1947. On April 21, 1952, Henry was united in marriage to Doris Dubuque at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Grand Forks, ND. On a farm near Tabor, together they raised small grains, potatoes and cattle. He also began Vasek Construction Inc., still being operated today by their son, Mike. After his stroke in 2000, he continued his love of farming with his Oliver tractor collection and gardening.

Arthur Robert Tinkham
Arthur Robert Tinkham, age 91, of Fisher and East Grand Forks, MN died peacefully early Saturday morning, April 6, 2013, at Valley Eldercare in Grand Forks, ND, with his family at his side. Art was born at Crookston, MN on January 16, 1922, the son of Roy and Nora (Swenson) Tinkham. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, attended country school, and later worked on area farms. In August of 1943, during WWII, Art enlisted in the US Army.

On December 28th of 1943, while home on leave, he was united in marriage to Wilma A. Strande at Fisher. As a member of the 540th Combat Engineers Group he was sent overseas the following January to serve in the European Theater of Operations in Italy and France. Art received his honorable discharge from the Army in 1946 and returned home to Wilma. The couple lived in Fisher, MN for a time and then farmed in nearby Roome Township, before eventually settling on their farm in Nesbit Township. Sadly, Wilma passed away on April 7, 1985, and a year later Art retired from farming. Later in life Art spent many enjoyable years with his friend, Patricia Anderson.

Delores J. Green
Delores J. Green, age 81 of St. Thomas, North Dakota passed away on Saturday, March 30, 2013 at the Sanford Hospital of Fargo, North Dakota.

Delores J. Mattson was born March 23, 1932 in Midland Township of Pembina County, the daughter of the late Torbies and Sophie (Arneson) Mattson. She attended rural school in Midland Township. Following her education, Delores worked as a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell in Grafton. She was united in marriage to Manvel Green on June 29, 1952 at the Grafton Lutheran Parsonage. The couple lived in Elizabethtown, KY from 1952-1954 while Manvel served in the United States Army. Following his discharge the couple returned to St. Thomas where they lived and farmed. Delores loved to help Manvel on the farm and was known to be a great truck driver. She later attended the University of North Dakota Art School.

Nicholas Joseph Matt, 84, of Tenstrike, MN, died Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at Progress West in O'Fallon, Missouri. He was born April 22, 1928 in Osage, Iowa; the son of Hubert H. and Irma Ida (Moser) Matt, who precede him.

Mr. Matt served in the United States Navy from August 1945 to November 1947. He married Mrs. Bernice Evlyn (Brunk) Matt on April 15, 1950 in Crookston, MN.

Lilah Mae Tiedeman
Lilah Mae Tiedeman, 85, of Crookston, MN, died in her home Thursday, March 21, 2013.

Lilah was born at Crookston on October 20, 1927, the daughter of Albert and Vella (Burkhardt) Menard. She attended grade school at St. Joseph's Academy and graduated from Crookston Central High School in 1945. While in high school, Lilah worked at Eagle Drug. She was later employed at the First National Bank and then in the Crookston office of the Minnesota State Highway Department, where she met her future husband, Ervin "Hap" Tiedeman. The couple married on April 26, 1950, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception rectory, and made their home in Crookston, raising three boys, Jeff, Kevin and Chuck. Lilah later worked for the Minnesota Bean and Pea Co. and American Crystal Sugar Company, as well as, being a caregiver to her parents. Sadly, Hap passed away on March 5, 1975. Lilah was a member of the Cathedral parish and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She also held memberships in the American Legion and Eagles auxiliaries, where she did a lot of volunteering, as well as, being a "grandma" to a lot of her friends' grandchildren.

A. Roger Kringlie, 85, of Grand Forks and formerly of Northwood died Friday, March 22, 2013 in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND.

A. Roger Kringlie was born on July 10, 1928 in Portland, ND the son of Marcus and Clara Kringlie. He grew up and graduated from high school in Portland. Roger enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during World War II in the Philippines and Okinawa. He returned from the service and attended Mayville State Teachers College, the University of South Dakota and the University of North Dakota. He received a Bachelor of Philosophy degree, Bachelor of Laws and Literature degrees and a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of North Dakota. He practiced law in Northwood, ND for more than 50 years. Roger married Julie Landman in 1955.

Lucille Godtland 80 of Fosston formerly of Gully, MN died on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at the First Care Nursing Home in Fosston.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at 10:00 AM at the Samhold Lutheran Church in Gonvick, MN with Rev. Michael Giese officiating. Visitation will be on Friday from 6-8 PM at Cease Family Funeral Home in Bagley, MN with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Interment following cremation will be at the Samhold Lutheran Cemetery in Gonvick. The Cease Family Funeral Home of Bagley assisted with the arrangements.

Gerald “Jerry” Lewis
Gerald “Jerry” Lewis, 66, of Grand Forks, ND passed away Friday, March 15, 2013 in the Good Samaritan Center, Larimore, ND.

Gerald Duane Lewis was born January 15, 1947 in St. Thomas, ND the son of Horace and Elise (Lorenzen) Lewis. He attended school in St. Thomas and Hoople, ND. He entered the United States Army on January 13, 1966 at Fargo, ND and served in Vietnam as an armament repair specialist. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and Vietnam Service Medal. He was honorably discharged from military service on October 26, 1967 at Oakland, CA. Following his military service, he was employed as a mechanic in several states on the east coast. Living in Grand Forks, he was employed as a mechanic with Weekley’s Auto Parts and Hanson Ford until his retirement. Jerry was a private man. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars; was an avid NASCAR fan, enjoyed watching television and visiting with his friends.
