Former Peace Corps members share memories of signing on with program started by Kennedy
The question put to four former Peace Corps volunteers Thursday was about how they measured the effectiveness of their service overseas. Did they make a difference? The panel discussion, part of a three-day UND conference on John F. Kennedy’s life and times, took place 45 years to the day after Kennedy spoke on campus. That was two years after he created the Peace Corps in 1961 and just two months before his assassination in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963.

Nurse earns national award for helping others deal with cancer's nonmedical challenges
When her father’s cancer was diagnosed in 1996, Brenda Jo Gillund knew that he was in for a difficult and challenging time. A nurse, she knew her father’s treatment could involve chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery. It did. And it involved something more, something that caused her to examine the nonmedical circumstances of cancer patients and how those might affect their chances for recovery. And with her late father clearly in mind, she did something about it, working with a friend to raise $200,000 and establish the Filling the Gap program at Altru Cancer Center in Grand Forks, which helps with transportation, housing and other expenses that might otherwise keep patients from necessary treatment.

North Dakota’s nice
It may seem counter-intuitive even to North Dakotans themselves (they’d probably accept “most self-effacing”), but that’s how the Peace Garden State is ranked — “friendliest” and “most outgoing” — in a just-published study by psychologists at Great Britain’s Cambridge University.
