Jerry Hoiseth, Crookston, letter: Labor dispute, Veterans Day shouldn’t mix
The letter dragged the locked-out Crystal workers into our solemn day of honoring our veterans. Earlier, the union leadership had tried to get the United Way involved in the labor dispute. Now, the leadership took the day that our soldiers and veterans are honored and dragged it through the same mud. That borders on being anti-American.

CAPITOL CHATTER: Veterans honor guards face challenges; members are aging, dwindling
Minnesotans thanked veterans Friday, but one of their most-desired honors needs an act of the Legislature and younger blood. Veterans Affairs Commissioner Larry Shellito said that many ex-military personnel have two major requests: a bronze marker at their grave denoting their veteran status and an American flag on their casket. Honor guards, which handle flag duties, were endangered when state officials forgot to include continued funding in their budget requests, so Gov. Mark Dayton and Shellito found the needed funds on a temporary basis. Now, they pledge to ask the Legislature to appropriate honor guard funding so it is more stable.

Minnesota hockey team helps heal veterans wounds
The Minnesota Warriors -- a Vadnais Heights hockey team of disabled veterans -- team serves a function similar to the VFW or American Legion, but with ice and hockey sticks. It gets players exercising, forces them out of isolation and recreates a sense of camaraderie and belonging that many had been missing since leaving the military.
