THE EATBEAT: Paradiso's chimichanga more than enough
A giant tortilla stuffed with nicely seasoned and finely ground beef appeared when I ordered a chimichanga at Paradiso Mexican Restaurant. One of the assistant managers had told me this is a signature item of the large and attractive eatery, which has been a fixture on South Washington Street since 1976.

RYAN BAKKEN: How much would you pay for this column?
Since imitation is the greatest form of flattery, I’m going to offer similar sponsorships to be an “owner” of my column. Since this column doesn’t have near the value of a radio station — which includes the likes of towers and pizza coupons — I’m offering these shares for the low, low price of $1.

MARILYN HAGERTY: Learning to walk again, a step at a time
Amazing. That is the only word I know to describe Nancy Stenseth. She taught English at Red River High School for 28 years. She has a loving husband, Paul. And she has a sunny disposition — even though she has lost one of her legs and most of the other in the past couple years. She shows up with a smile on her face to play bridge with her friends.

MARILYN HAGERTY: Seek and ye shall find turkey dinners year round
You would think June was made for hotdogs from the barbecue and fish from area lakes. Still, the response was swift and sure when a reader asked last week where she could find a real turkey dinner around here. Quickly, a couple readers pointed out real turkey dinners are regular fare in the restaurant at the Flying J truck stop at the intersection of Interstate 29 and 32nd Avenue South.

MARILYN HAGERTY: Summer rolls into Grand Forks
Dear Shirley, My calendar says this is the first day of summer. So I am looking out my window on a tree loaded with little green apples and peonies in bloom. There are a few stray rabbits that find their way into the backyard, but Dot.Com the dachshund gives them a run for their money.

THE EATBEAT: Larson's Drive-Inn has at home feel
If you dip green bean fries into a mushroom sauce, it tastes just like the familiar old green bean casserole that you may be familiar with from holiday get-togethers. And green bean fries are one of the unique items available at Larson’s Drive-Inn, a modest blue-and-white building on the west side of state Highway 18 leading into this town of approximately 1,3000 that’s located about 28 miles west of Grand Forks off U.S. Highway 2.

There’s something I want to say to the persons who bag my groceries. It’s been several years since I sent them a letter and things change. People forget. Since I don’t know the proper name, I will just address this to BP (Bagger Person).

MARILYN HAGERTY: Is one sweetener better than another?
We pretty much know that sugar and sweet drinks are a part of our obesity problem. What we don’t know is whether one sweetener is better or worse than another. So Susan Rotts of the Grand Forks Human Nutrition Research Center is hoping to find out. She has a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota and a grant from the U.S. Honey Board to study the effect of honey, white sugar and high fructose corn syrup on the body.
