The Beatles were still together, LBJ was president and half of the current Grand Forks police force wasn’t born when Capt. Kerwin “K.J.” Kjelstrom first put on his badge and began walking a beat downtown. That was Aug. 26, 1968. His retirement ceremony this morning at the cop shop will mark Kjelstrom, 66, as the longest-serving officer ever in the city’s 130 years of police officers, said Lt. Dwight Love. “And the longest-serving there probably ever will be.”
