RYAN BAKKEN: A beaded lockout solution
The American Crystal Sugar lockout is all about the sugar program, which is government protectionism that guarantees high prices for domestic sugar. In the current political climate, the sugar program is destined for the gallows. So, ACS growers and executives figure, costs need to be trimmed. Thus, there’s the contract stalemate.

Shar Knutson, St. Paul, letter: Lockout puts sugar program in jeopardy
Anyone involved with growing sugar beets, producing sugar or bringing the product to market knows the importance of the federal government’s sugar program. The program puts a limit on how much sugar is imported to the U.S. It has created a fair market for Red River Valley sugar beet growers to earn a living, and it created good-paying jobs in the production facilities for many decades.

DRAYTON, N.D.: Main Street locked out by lockout
As smallest Red River Valley community with American Crystal Sugar plant, Drayton feels pinch of lockout even more
Drayton likely is the hardest hit community proportionally of the five Red River Valley plant sites because its population of 800 is the smallest, about half of Hillsboro’s. But some see a greater harm than lost wages and lower beet payments to growers, not the least in community relationships -- some which may never be mended.

RALPH KINGSBURY: North Dakota won’t be immune from globalization’s woes
Globalization. That’s the way they describe it now. When the trend first started, it was called free trade. We were told — and most of us believed — that if only we would let production take place in countries with the greatest “comparative advantage,” we would all be better off. It’s not my intention to discuss the American Crystal situation again, except to say that as it relates to free trade and globalization, the federal sugar program’s survival even in the near future is questionable.
