Today's movie princesses breaking the mold
For modern movie princesses, looking pretty and marrying a prince isn't enough. Take "Mirror Mirror," where Snow White rescues her prince from an evil spell, or "Snow White and the Huntsman," where she becomes the hunter who avenges her father, marries none of her suitors and confidently runs her kingdom alone.

‘Brave’: Let’s hear it for the girl
It’s been a good couple of months for strong-minded women wielding medieval weaponry: “The Hunger Games,” “Snow White and the Huntsman” and now Pixar’s “Brave.” Set in the Scottish highlands of, oh, a thousand years ago, this dark and lovely yarn borrows from old world folktales, and more than a bit, too, from Hayao Miyazaki’s heroine-driven animated adventures.

Val Wagner, Monango, N.D., letter: A better way to protect animals in N.D.
I say, skip the narrowly focused, animal-rights-led ballot initiative, and join North Dakotans for Responsible Animal Care in advocating for common-sense legislation that protects every North Dakota animal from cruelty, neglect and abandonment.

Flood claims animals at Lake Superior Zoo
The floodwaters at the Lake Superior Zoo rose several feet Wednesday morning, completely engulfing three bird habitats and washing away all of the animals in the barnyard exhibit. By the time the waters receded, zoo staff said three of its birds had drowned, turkey vulture, a raven, a snowy owl; of the barnyard animals, only a miniature horse survived, while six sheep, four goats and a donkey died.

Ag, farm, animal groups join to propose new animal laws
North Dakota’s laws prohibiting animal cruelty are so weak that prosecutors seldom can take action, animal protection advocates have long complained. After a new proposal announced Thursday, two separate coalitions are championing competing proposals to better protect animals — one that could go before voters in November and one that will go to legislators next year.

Rising gas prices causing drivers to turn to smaller, better engines
Back when gas was cheap, Americans bought cars with V-8 engines like the Big Block, Cobra Jet and Ramcharger. Acceleration was all that mattered, even in family cars that never made it to full throttle. But now, thanks to government regulation and gas-price gyrations, the motors that move the nation's cars and trucks are shrinking.

RYAN BAKKEN: Making bingo out of horse ‘plops’
One of the standard rules of parades: Don’t put a beauty queen float directly behind the horses. That’s because it’s difficult to smile with a curled-up nose. Curled-up noses are inevitable because parade horses do what bears do in the woods. It’s a groan-inducing cliché that the crappiest job for parade volunteers is walking the route with a shovel and pail.
